On the 24th of May 2017, Taiwan’s top court ruled in favour of marriage equality, making Taiwan the first in Asia to legalise gay marriage. Upon the outbreak of this news, Taiwanese director Huang Hui-Chen shared a heartwarming sentiment on her Facebook page stating, “love will always find a way.”


2017年5月24日,台湾最高法院裁定婚姻平等,使台湾成为亚洲第一个同性婚姻合法化的地区。消息公布之后中,台湾导演黄惠侦 在脸书上发布了一个情感真挚的帖子:“願天下有情人終成眷屬” 。

Huang was a political activist before she began making documentary films; she rose to fame after her feature film, Small Talk, premiered at the 53rd Golden Horse Film Festival. Small Talk is a riveting documentary that comprises of sit-down interviews that take place between Huang and her estranged lesbian mother, A-nu. When Huang gave birth to a daughter of her own in 2012, she felt further compelled to repair her alienating relationship with her mother. Despite the two living under the same roof, they co-exist as strangers with little to no human interaction.


在拍摄纪录片之前,黄惠侦曾是一名政治活动家,因为个人导演的电影《日常对话》在第53届金马电影节上首映后一举成名。《日常对话》是一部备受关注的纪录片。影片由多段黄惠侦与她曾疏远了的同性恋母亲阿女之间的访谈组成。2012年,黄惠侦生下了自己的女儿,同时也更迫切地希望能修复与母亲之间的关系。尽管两个人生活在同一个屋檐下,却像陌生人一样,几乎没有任何互动。

At times, the documentary is filled with long silences and an uncomfortable tension. With each talk, Huang probes her mother who reluctantly begins to reveal layers of her past. Beyond these emotion-driven conversations, the film also consists of interviews with A-nu’s previous and present lovers, her siblings, and a few home videos that were shot over the past two decades. The film adds an extra level of intrigue for viewers who journey along with Huang, an open-minded heterosexual daughter who is desperately trying to connect with her evasive homosexual mother.


影片中出现了多次长时间的沉默和令人不舒服的紧张感。每次“谈话”,黄惠侦都在进一步促使母亲不情愿地层层透露自己的过去。除了这些情绪驱动的对话之外,影片中,黄惠侦还与阿女以前和现在的恋人、她的兄弟姐妹之间进行了对话,并穿插了过去二十年间的几段家庭影片。作为一名开明的异性恋女儿,黄惠侦在努力试图与讳莫如深的同性恋母亲接近距离,影片也试图为一路跟踪这一过程发展的观众呈现一些更引人入胜的体验。

At the beginning of 2017, Small Talk was awarded Best Documentary at the Teddy Awards in Berlin, casting a warm spotlight on LGBTIQ families in Taiwan. Small Talk not only offers viewers an intimate insight into rural Taiwanese culture but also into the fragile relationship that exists within Huang’s family, and that is what makes the film so universally relevant.

Uncoloring North Korea

Shanghai-based photographer Ni Chen describes her time in North Korea as a surreal step back in time. “To be honest, whilst I don’t know much about North Korean politics, I was intrigued by this social system, one which was a stark contrast to anything that I have experienced before.” The most notable difference for her was the colors — or rather, the lack thereof. Pyongyang’s color palette consisted of blacks, grays, and navy blues. Shades of red, blue, and green were almost exclusively reserved for public facilities and ornaments.


在上海摄影师倪晨眼中,身处朝鲜的那段时间就像是一次回到过去的旅行。“关于朝鲜,老实说,对于政治我一无所知,只是好奇未曾经历过的社会体制。”对她来说,最大的区别在于色彩——这个国家的色彩相对寡淡。路上行人穿的衣服基本是黑/灰/藏青色,他们对红/蓝/绿十分执着,几乎只出现在所有公共设施和装饰上。

Ni Chen’s time in North Korea was split between Pyongyang and Kaesong; as most of the journey was heavily regulated, she was unable to capture some “truly beautiful” moments on camera. “After stepping out of the Pyongyang Railway Station, I found myself facing an iron-clad playground; it was a beautiful moment, observing these free-spirited kids playing. A shame that I couldn’t photograph them.” On her way to Kaesong, there was also an almost cinematic moment when a young boy stood on a hillside, watching their tour group’s bus drive by. He wore a green sweater and stared inquisitively at the vehicle as three crows flew past him. “That moment was so beautiful, it felt so much like a scene from an Andrei Tarkovsky film.”


倪晨在朝鲜期间主要去了平壤和开城两个城市。在朝鲜,游客会受到严格的管制,因此,有很多“真正美丽”的瞬间她都没有机会用镜头记录下来。从平壤火车站出来会经过一个儿童公园非常漂亮复古的铁质娱乐设施小孩子也都很高兴的样子可惜不允许下车拍照。” 从平壤到开城的巴士上,经过一个山坡时,有个穿绿色毛衣的小男孩站在山坡上观望着她所在的巴士,突然三只乌鸦从他身前掠过。她感慨道:“那是非常漂亮的瞬间,就像安德烈·塔科夫斯基的电影。

Ni Chen also visited the Pyongyang city library, which like typical libraries, feature a collection of books that are available for borrowing, but also courses for learning foreign languages. The most intriguing part of the visit was seeing how the computers in the library could only be accessed using LAN; locals are only able to use them to log on to North Korea’s tightly controlled Kwangmyong intranet system.


平壤市内的图书馆,除了借阅图书,还可以学习外语课程。图书馆内的电脑只能使用局域网, 人们可以登录到朝鲜的国家局域网路“光明网”(Kwangmyong Net)。

She also observed that the capital’s architecture was noticeably Soviet in style. Korean signage aside, this moment brought Ni Chen back to her time traveling and photographing Russia.


平壤的建筑受到了不少俄罗斯美学的影响尤其是那些有拱形过道的大楼。除了那些韩语标牌,这里的建筑让倪晨想起了自己在俄罗斯旅行和摄影的经历。

During the trip, one image of a girl reading on a public bus became one of Ni Chen’s favorites. “This was a candid moment that would not look out of place anywhere in the world.”


倪晨最喜欢的一张照片是在公交车上读书的女孩子。喜欢给在各地遇见的阅读者拍照即便是在色彩寡淡的平壤阅读者令这个地方生动了起来

Once outside of Pyongyang, Ni Chen managed to capture a moment that is truly out of the norm for most photographers that travel to North Korea. In the city of Kaesong, she serendipitously stumbled across a wedding. “They were just as surprised to see me as I was to find them. I could only guess that the collective reciting of revolutionary history and their fist pump actions were part of the ceremony.”


离开平壤后,倪晨捕捉到许多到朝鲜旅游的摄影师都难以拍摄到的画面。在开城,她偶然遇到了一场婚礼。“他们看到我时,和我一样吃惊。我猜测,猜拳可能是婚礼的一个传统,除此之外,他们还需要集体学习革命历史。”

Towards the end of her journey, she snapped an image of the small shark tank in the lobby of Pyongyang’s Yanggakdo International Hotel. “Whilst this hotel looked impressive from the outside, the furnishings and facilities inside reminded me of a local police station in one of China’s third or fourth-tier cities. This shark tank sort of symbolized North Korea as a whole to me – it’s a small nation that is trying so hard to appear terrifying.”


在这段旅程的结尾,她在平壤的羊角岛饭店的酒店大堂拍摄了养着鲨鱼的鱼缸。虽然酒店外观十分豪华但是内部装饰和设施都非常老派有点像中国三四线城市的小派出所。这个养着鲨鱼的鱼缸有些像朝鲜的一个缩影。

Only a Mother Would Know

The philosophy behind the works of Beijing-based photographer, Luo Yang is centered on the female gender. For Luo, the plethora of characteristics that women are able to embody is what makes them such a rich and intriguing subject matter. Over the past decade, her body of work has centered on the journey of girls growing up into women – capturing both the fragility and tenacity of women are what makes her images so humanizing. The life changes that her subjects undergo, such as the process of entering motherhood, inspired her latest photo series. “I was drawn to these women and their attempts in maintaining a balance between self-care and child rearing. It was a process that I appreciated greatly and found myself wanting to express. When I met Yu Mo and her son, I knew that their relationship would be central to this series. I want to continue capturing this relationship as both mother and son grow together. I hope this to be a long-term project which breaks all preconceived conceptions about ordinary human relationships.” Having more questions than answers after our talk with Luo Yang, we decided to chat with Yu Mo, the mother who modeled for this project, in an attempt to gain more insight into what this project means to her.


摄影师罗洋擅长拍摄以女性为主题的作品,她认为女性的原始天性中有着一股柔软与脆弱,这部分的特质是很人性化的,并且十分的感性,但同时也存在着一种潜在的顽强精神,正是这种特质打动了她。在这10年的拍摄过程中,罗洋的镜头下记录了很多女孩的成长,是女孩变成了女人再到母亲的过程,她一直都试图去捕捉这种身份的变化,特别是成为母亲的一些女性。罗洋说:“当我看到她们试图维持自我和母亲这个角色的平衡时,当她们努力在琐碎的家庭生活中不失去自我时,我发现这是我想去表达和欣赏的。所以当我认识到玉墨和她的儿子(这组作品的主角),很快就觉得我要去拍摄他们。”由此产生了这组母子为主题的作品。这将会是一个长期的拍摄,接下去也会继续记录他们母子两人的生活,记录人性与爱,试着打破常人固有的观念。对于这组有趣并且大胆照片,我们有太多的问题想问了,所以经过摄影师的允许,我们采访到了这组照片中的主角,模特母亲玉墨,通过她的角度我们试图了解这组照片对她的意义。

Neocha: What does this series of photographs mean to you? Why were you interested in participating in this project in the first place?

Yu Mo: Children are endlessly growing and developing. Each phase passes by so quick. If you miss it, it’s gone forever. I’m grateful that Luo Yang could record this period in our lives through this photo series, which I greatly treasure. I really enjoyed Luo Yang’s other female-related works. Her style is quite different from other photographers I’ve known, so I really wanted to try and work with her. Coincidentally, she had an idea to shoot a project related to children and childhood, so the stars aligned.


Neocha: 罗洋的这组照片对你的意义是什么?你为什么想参与这次合作?

玉墨: 孩子时时刻刻在成长,每个阶段过得都很快,如果错过就永远失去了,罗洋通过作品去记录下来这一刻,对我而言,非常宝贵。当时只是看了罗洋的女性作品,非常欣赏,和我身边的摄影师的风格不同,所以想尝试和她合作,正好她也希望能拍小孩主题的作品,所以一拍即合。

Neocha: How does your son feel about this photo shoot? What was his reaction to some of the photos afterward?

Yu Mo: He’s actually participated in his fair share of shoots already and didn’t feel like this project was any different. He reviewed every single photo quite seriously and told me which ones he liked. His favorites from this shoot are the ones where we’re cuddling and playing around. I don’t fully understand the standards he judges these photos on, but I assume it comes from a childhood innocence.


Neocha: 你的儿子是怎么看待这场拍摄的?他看过最终照片之后有什么评价?

玉墨: 其实他参与的拍摄挺多的了,不会觉得这次拍摄有啥特别。他很认真地看了每一张照片,并果断告诉我哪些是他喜欢的照片,他特别喜欢和我依偎在一起的和玩耍的照片。我不了解他评判的标准,应该更多是来自小孩的天性吧。

Neocha: It’s difficult to keep a young child calm. Can you share some of the interesting things that happened during the shoot?

Yu Mo: Seeing as how he’s been photographed a lot, he’s sort of experienced, so he doesn’t act unruly. I did tell him beforehand that this shoot would be in the nude. The funny thing is, the moment he took off his clothes in the room, he went wild and started horsing around. The removing of clothes was like a release of energy for him, something that unleashed his true and most natural self.


Neocha: 孩子都比较难控制,在拍摄过程中有因此发生什么有趣的事吗?

玉墨: 他拍得比较多了,可以说已经玩得蛮有经验了吧,所以还挺好控制的。事先有告诉他这次拍不穿衣服的照片,有趣的事是他脱完衣服就开始在房间疯玩,像是放开了天性、精力充沛。

Neocha: What are your thoughts on nude photography? What does it represent to you? If you weren’t nude in the shoot, how would it alter the meaning behind this series?

Yu Mo: As a model, I feel like it’s important to work with the photographer on their envisioned theme and message. Of course, during the process, the model can express their own thoughts and suggestions to the photographer. Being nude or not isn’t important. The most important part is fully conveying the feelings and themes that the photographer is after. Whether you’re clothed or nude, you can still produce great photography. In the end, it’s about what you’re trying to convey.


Neocha: 对于全裸体的拍摄你有什么看法?它代表了什么?如果拍摄是穿衣服的,正系列的意义会是跟裸体不一样么?

玉墨: 我觉得作为模特,主要是配合摄影师的主题和表达,当然,在具体呈现中可以提出自己的感受給摄影师参考。裸不裸不是主要的,关键是能不能体现摄影师的需要表达的情感,主题。穿衣服和裸体一样可以有好的照片,关键看你想表达什么。

Neocha: Have your friends or family seen these photos? What were their reactions?

Yu Mo: My family hasn’t seen them, but many of my friends have. Some people like them, some have said I’m brave, and some don’t approve. It’s definitely controversial, but I’m unaffected by outside opinion, I only look to myself. I think this project was quite a natural and realistic depiction of my son and I. What parents haven’t been in a circumstance where they’re unclothed in the same room with their offspring?


Neocha: 你身边的亲朋有看过这组照片吗?他们又会对这组照片有什么看法?

玉墨: 亲戚家人没有看过,朋友当中有很多关注. 有赞赏,也有惊叹我大胆的,也有不认可,争议肯定是有的,但我不会受外界干扰,还是比较属于自我的。而且我觉得我们作品表现得很现实,很自然。哪对父母没有在孩子的小时候和他们赤诚相待过?

Whether it be for breakfast, lunch, dinner or groceries, customers are able to literally just grab what they need and go. After leaving the store, a pre-registered card is charged and Wheelys automatically sends a receipt. This 500-square-foot store is just the beginning for a new era of convenience stores that will change the way we shop forever.

Bicycle Boy

After visiting Seiseki-Sakuragaoka, the Japanese suburbs that the 1995 Studio Ghibli film Whisper of the Heart was modeled after, Polish-born and Tokyo-based artist Mateusz Urbanowicz was inspired to paint his Bicycle Boy series, which consists of ten watercolor paintings that bring the film’s narrow roads and suburban landscapes to life. Urbanowicz uses 6B pencils to sketch out each moment before coloring them with Schimincke and Winsor & Newton watercolors. This series takes us on a journey of a dedicated bicycle boy who rides up challenging inclines and through the elements in order to reach his destination. Many of Urbanowicz’s other illustrations are also inspired by his new adoptive home of Japan as well as the animated backgrounds that feature in many Japanese anime films.


波兰出生的艺术家Mateusz Urbanowicz目前生活在东京。在参观完日本郊区圣迹樱丘(Seiseki-Sakuragaoka)——1995年吉卜力电影《心之谷》(Whisper of the Heart)的场景原型后,Urbanowicz创作了《自行车男孩》(Bicycle Boy)水彩画系列,通过十幅水彩画,栩栩如生地呈现出电影中出现的狭窄小巷和日本郊区景观。Urbanowicz在创作时,先使用6B铅笔画出草图,然后用Schimincke和Winsor&Newton水彩上色。这个水彩画系列带领观众,跟随一名骑自行车的男孩,骑过艰难的斜坡,经历各种天气,朝着目的地进发。Urbanowicz的许多其它插图的灵感还来自于他如今生活的日本,以及许多日本动画中的场景。

An Artful Aftermath

Cleveland-born and Singapore-based artist Debra Raymond knows first hand about being in transit. After leaving Ohio, she lived in Jakarta before relocating to the little red dot; in her art,“constant migration” remains as a heavy inspiration. Contemporary social issues such as urban alienation and technology’s hindrance on human connection feature heavily within her body of work.


艺术家Debra Raymond出生于美国克利夫兰,如今定居新加坡。对于”迁徙“,她深有体会。离开俄亥俄州后, 她先是在雅加达生活,后又移居新加坡。在她的作品中, “不间断的迁徙” 一直是一种沉重的创作灵感,她在作品中深入探讨着各种当代社会问题, 如城市异化和科技对人际关系的影响等等。

During her BA (Hons) Fine Arts in Singapore’s LASALLE College of the Arts, she explored the significance of play in childhood development and how to encourage human interaction through art in our technologically advanced era. In late 2016, Raymond completed an artist residency at the Children Centre of Japan in the Miyagi Prefecture’s Ogatsu-cho. During her residency, she conducted workshops with local children to create a series of works to remember the 2011 tsunami and earthquake.


在新加坡拉萨尔艺术学院(LASALLE College of the Arts)攻读荣誉学士学位期间, 她研究了戏剧在童年发展中的意义, 以及如何在科技先进的时代通过艺术来鼓励人类互动。2016年9月, Raymond 完成了“艺术家驻住计划”(Artist-in-residence),居住在日本宫城县小村庄Ogatsu-cho的儿童中心。期间, 她以2011年的海啸事件为灵感,为当地的儿童举办艺术讲习班。

Inspired by the houses that survived the tsunami, Raymond created 20 sculptures out of wood that was foraged from the area. The sculptures are based on 30 sketches that were painted in 30 days. The series was created to commemorate “the everydayness that we often take for granted” and installed around the prefecture.


Raymond 以海啸中幸存的房子为启发,利用当地获取的木材,并以她在驻住期间完成的30幅作品为基础创作了20个雕塑。她所创作这一系列雕塑,被安放在村庄的不同角落,目的是为了赞颂 “那些往往被人们当作理所当然的平凡生活” 。

When Pigs Fly

For many people, the mere mention of Hong Kong conjures images of harboursides, modern skyscrapers, a smorgasbord of culinary delights and a true retail mecca. But if you look closer, the vintage stores and dated architecture of the city are very much interconnected to this port city’s identity and history. As Hong Kong develops, many of these older stores are disappearing. Fortunately, illustrator Flyingpig is determined to preserve the memories and stories of these disappearing shops.


提到香港,也许多数人的印象是现代化的玻璃大厦,多国美食和购物中心。可是,这座开埠多年的城市,只要细心去发掘,会发现许多老店和旧建筑与这城的关係密不可分,却渐渐在发展中消失。插画师飞天猪,希望用笔触画下香港各式旧区老店,记下充满人情味的故事。

Despite studying animation in college, Flyingpig is an avid illustrator. After graduating, she worked in film post-production before transitioning towards digital illustration. Amongst balancing her work life and illustrating in her spare time, she found herself questioning her current career path. Sundays became the only day when she could unwind and take the time to sketch. As her sketches accumulated and continuously received positive feedback online, Flyingpig began to understand that drawing didn’t mean working alone. “I realized that my work could send a message,” she says. “I never considered that I could make a living off illustrating alone.” She soon quit her job and plunged head first into illustration.


喜欢绘画的飞天猪,大学时修读动画,毕业后从事电影后製,及后任职电脑绘图,工作所学什多,然而每天辛劳过后,她发现一切并非自己所渴望,倒是能够休息的星期天,在城市中写生的时刻,她才感到是属于自己的空间。随着写生数量渐多,放在网上所得的迴响,飞天猪发现写生不再是她一个人的事情「原来我的画作可以传达信息。以往从没想过可以靠画画维生。」于是决定辞去全职工作,专心投入画画的世界,做自己喜欢的事。

On canvas, the colorful portrayals of vintage stores are beautifully and purposefully executed. But, beyond the canvas, Flyingpig finds her interactions with these store owners to be infinitely more meaningful and important. She enjoys learning the history and stories behind these stores, building a connecting between herself and the community. “There was a time when I went to draw the shopfronts in Sheung Wan. As I sat by the roadside, the shopkeeper offered me a leather suitcase to rest my drawing pad on. He began to tell me about the little things that he had around his shop. It made me realise that amongst these spaces, there were so many stories that were just waiting to told.”


画框之内是吸引眼球、色彩斑斓的旧区小店,然而,画框之外与店主的交流,暸解小店背后的故事,接触社区,对飞天猪来说才是最重要,也衍生一份使命感驱使她不断创作「我到上环的朱荣记画画,当时坐在马路边,老板好心给我纸皮箱垫袋子,还分享小店每件货品和子承父业的故事。从那时便意识到每间小店可以有属于自己的绘本,我想为它们记下各自的故事。」

Looking at Flyingpig’s debut illustration book, Lao Dian Feng Qing Hua (which translates into vintage shop illustrations), her love of watercolors is ever present. Not only is this a casual, effortless medium, but she can allow her personality to flow through each brushstroke. These watercolor illustrations carry a laidback and mellow vibe, combined with the warmth of quaint Hong Kong shops.  “City folks are always in a rush, people are growing further apart and don’t have a sense of community. Meanwhile, these beautiful details of life remain overlooked and are slowly disappearing. What I hope for when people view my work, is that it’ll make them want to support these small local shops rather franchised retail stores.”


飞天猪出版的首本着作《老店风情画》,从书中画作可见,她爱以水彩绘画,认为其流畅轻快的特点,与自己放胆去画的个性相近。加上水彩看来轻鬆,配合画中的主题,能够传递出小店的温暖。「城市人来去匆匆,不去关注生活的社区,人与人的关係会变得冷漠,逐渐失去生活中可以珍惜的细节。我希望画作令人看后,会想起买一枝樽装水,可以去街角的士多,而非连锁式的超级市场。」

As the city advances and develops, these old shops are silently fading into the background. Despite having a mellow, paced approach to creation since childhood, Flyingpig is now painting with haste and vigor in order to capture these disappearing scenes. Aside from drawing on paper, she has begun to release 360 degree videos. By using AR technology to enhance her drawings, she can immerse viewers into the very thick Hong Kong’s bustling shophouses. Throughout the interview, Flyingpig stressed that “every drawing must have a story” and she remains dedicated to bringing these stories to life through her art.


城市快速的更替,旧区的小店逐渐无声被淘汰。从小喜欢安静在一角画画的飞天猪,却愈画愈起劲,似要追赶发展的步速,在小店消失前继续画下去。她的画作除了以平面展现在画纸上,也推出以360度影片让人观赏。未来她想尝试以AR技术,让人亲自走入社区,在手机上重现她画下,却在现实消失的建筑。无论以何种方式呈现作品,毕竟画面上的温度,都是来自背后承载着的历史和故事,如飞天猪在访谈中多次强调,「故事是每幅画必须的!」

INORI–PRAYER is a collaboration between Japan-based visual design studio WOW Inc., creative production team TOKYO, the Ishikawa Watanbe Laboratory at the University of Tokyo, and iconic dance duo AyaBambi. The project was the brainchild of Nobumichi Asai, the creative director of WOW Inc. Inspired by Yosuke Nagao’s music, Asai felt the music embodied a radioactive, destructive power. Together, the visuals and choreography work together to present a vision of “death, suffering and sadness.”


《INORI–PRAYER》是日本视觉设计工作室 WOW Inc.携手创意制作团队TOKYO,东京大学的石川渡辺研究室以及舞蹈组合AyaBambi一起打造的数码艺术项目。项目由 WOW 创意及技术总监Nobumichi Asai 发起。他在听到Yosuke Nagao的配乐后,深受启发,觉得它象征了一种放射性般的破坏力。通过将视觉效果和舞蹈相结合,表达出“死亡、痛苦和悲伤”的情绪。

One of the main challenges of the project was to ensure that the facial mapping would be precise throughout the entire dance segment. After three months of trial and error, the team managed to reduce the projection delay down to mere milliseconds — this was accomplished through the use of DynaFlash, a state-of-the-art 1,000 fps projector with an ultra high-speed sensing system. The projected images take on the form of a second skin, which continuously distort and transform the faces of AyaBambi’s two dancers throughout the entire performance.


这个项目的主要挑战之一是确保在整个舞蹈环节中获得精确的面部映射。历经三个月的试验后,团队使用最先进的1000fps DynaFlash 超高速传感投影机,成功地将投影延迟减低至数毫秒,投影图像宛如舞者的第二层皮肤,更使得AyaBambi 两位舞者的面孔在整个表演过程中扭曲和变幻出各种图案。

Japan is a true mecca for dining and local delicacies; the region is renowned for its unique cuisine, which is championed by fresh local produce and exceptional chefs. Although quality restaurants may be bountiful, getting a coveted reservation can be problematic for travelers. Enter TABLEALL – an online platform that aims to bridge the gap between high-end Japanese cuisine and gastronomy lovers.

Throughout his 15 year career at Goldman Sachs, TABLEALL founder Takashi Yamada found himself frequently entertaining clients at top restaurants in Japan. Not only did his patronage enable him to build connections with Japan’s best chefs but it also shed light into the loss experienced by the restaurant when reservations were cancelled at the last minute. Yamada was also frequently called upon by frustrated friends who were exasperated by Japan’s non-inclusive methods for booking reservations. All of these factors paved the way towards the lightbulb moment of creating TABLEALL.

Instead of charging for membership, TABLEALL only requires diners to pay a small booking fee per reservation. The platform currently offers the following features:

  • Insight into individual chefs and the stories behind their signature dishes

The platform is a true game changer for travellers, allowing the agenda to switch from “where can I get in?” to “where shall we choose today?”

Known for “painting without a paint brush” and creating masterpieces from unconventional items, Malaysian artist Red Hong Yi has amounted an impressive portfolio of larger than life portraits consisting of some of Asia’s most prominent figures. From the humble teh tarik man, to megastars like Jackie Chan and Jay Chou, and even Singapore’s national symbol, the Merlion, Red has used unorthodox items, such as tea bags, coffee stains, and sunflower seeds, to create symbolic portraits that are astounding in both scale and detail.


马来西亚艺术家Red Hong Yi 被大家称为“不用画笔绘画”的画家,原因是她总能想到出其不意的材料来创作,茶包、瓜子,甚至是咖啡杯底残留在纸上的咖啡渍,都成为了她绘画的“颜料”。她用这些我们日常生活中随手可得的材料,创造出一幅幅以著名亚洲人物为原型的大型肖像作品。从马拉西亚街头的“拉茶人(teh tarik man)”,到超级巨星成龙和周杰伦,再到新加坡的国家象征鱼尾狮。这些画作通常竖立起来比Red的个子还高,但当你走近细看,就会发现Red在创作大画幅作品的同时,也保留到它精致的细节,让人过目不忘。

Ai Wei Wei – Sunflower Seeds

The portrait that started it all was her sunflower seed tribute to Chinese contemporary artist Ai Wei Wei. Red completed this “painting” in an old Shanghainese shikumen alleyway with seven kilograms of sunflower seeds – five years later, she revived this portrait using 20,000 sunflower seeds to create her second Ai Wei Wei portrait, entitled Open Your Eyes.


艾未未,材料: 葵花籽

作为她的第一幅巨型肖像作品,她用葵花籽描绘出中国当代艺术家艾未未。Red 在上海一个传统石库门弄堂完成了这个作品,一共使用了7公斤的葵花籽。5年后,她再次创作艾未未的画像,这一次,她一共使用了20000颗葵花籽,并将作品命名为《睁开你的眼睛》(Open Your Eyes)。

Zhang Yimou – Socks and Pins 

During Red’s time in Shanghai, she also completed another portrait in one of the city’s iconic shikumen alleys. To depict the face of Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, Red used pins to piece together an array of monochromatic socks, which were then hung on bamboo poles much like how locals hang their laundry.

在上海的时候,Red还在另一处标志性的石库门弄堂完成了另一幅肖像作品——中国著名导演张艺谋。Red用别针把一堆单色袜子拼凑在一起,然后像当地人晾衣服一样,挂在竹杆上。

Yao Ming – Basketball and Red Paint

Armed with a basketball and a pail of paint, Red bounced her way into creating a patterned portrait of Chinese basketball superstar Yao Ming.

带着篮球和一桶颜料,Red 用篮球“拍”出中国篮球巨星姚明的画像。

Dato’ Lee Chong Wei – Shuttlecock Feathers

This high contrast profile of Malaysian Dato’ Lee Chong Wei, a World No. 1 professional badminton player, was put together with 1,800 shuttlecock feathers to celebrate his face off with Chinese player Lin Dan at the World Championships in Guangzhou.

为了描绘马来西亚的世界头号羽毛球选手李宗伟,Red用1800条羽毛球上的羽毛,拼贴出一幅高对比度的肖像作品,以纪念李宗伟和林丹在广州世界锦标赛上的对决。

Jay Chou – Coffee and Coffee Cups

Red’s portrait of Taiwanese pop megastar Jay Chou is one of her more symbolic works. “This project was inspired by the opening and closing lines in Jay Chou’s song ‘Secret.’ The opening line is about lifting a coffee cup from a saucer and the last line of the song is about autumn leaves and fragmented pieces.” She used hundreds of imperfect individual coffee stains to form Jay Chou’s portrait, likening them to the falling autumn leaves mentioned in “Secret.” The portrait took 12 hours to complete – Red said that coffee is one of her more temperamental mediums to date, as it was challenging to achieve the perfect consistency and required it to be applied in layers.


周杰伦,材料:咖啡和咖啡杯

Aung San Suu Kyi – White Carnations and Red Food Dye

“I didn’t sleep the whole night thinking of how to capture Aung San Suu Kyi’s great aura, dedication, strength, determination, compassion, intelligence, courage, poise, and gracefulness in a portrait. I wanted a portrait that not only captured her political eminence but also her beauty and love for her father, and his for her.” Red experimented with flowers and food dye for an entire month before creating her portrait of the Burmese Nobel Prize winner.

 


昂山素季(Aung San Suu Kyi),材料: 白色康乃馨和红色食品染料

“创作这幅作品时,我一整夜没有睡觉,一直在思考,怎样才能在一幅肖像作品中,捕捉住昂山素季的非凡光环——她的奉献精神、坚强、坚定、慈悲、智慧、勇气、风度和优雅的气质。我希望这幅肖像作品不仅能体现她的政治地位,同时展现出她的美丽,以及她与父亲之间的爱。”Red先用鲜花和食物染料反复实验了整整一个月,才开始为缅甸诺贝尔奖得主昂山素季创作这幅肖像作品。

The Merlion – Disposable Bamboo Chopsticks and Fire

The crown jewel of Facebook’s Singapore-based office is giant wall mural consisting of 15,000 disposable chopsticks, which were layered and torched to reveal the country’s national icon overlooking some of Singapore’s most recognizable sights.

这幅用15000支一次性竹筷拼贴的巨型作品,被固定在Facebook的新加坡总部办公室的墙上。通过分层排列,用火焚烧上色,Red描绘了新加坡的著名标志和最知名的景点。

Teh Tarik Man – Tea Bags

Touted as a quintessential Malaysian everyday hero, the teh tarik man is a namesake of Red’s Southeast Asian upbringing. Teh Tarik means “pulled tea” in Malay and is a traditional beverage that is comprised of sweet and frothy milk tea. Over ten shades of brown and 20,000 tea bags were used – in the end, this homage to her homeland weighed a whopping 200 kilograms.

Jackie Chan – Disposable Bamboo Chopsticks

To commemorate Hollywood legend Jackie Chan’s 60th birthday, Red collected 64,000 disposable chopsticks from around Zhejiang and in Beijing to create his portrait. The chopsticks were grouped together with string and placed in sequence along a metal frame, alongside 60 bamboo chopsticks holders that were intricately filled with skewers to form the Chinese word long, which is Jackie’s first name in Mandarin Chinese.


《成龙》,材料: 一次性竹筷

为了纪念传奇影星成龙的60岁生日,Red 在浙江和北京两地收集了64000支一次性筷子,创造了这一幅肖像作品。她用细绳将筷子捆在一起,在一个金属架上排列出成龙的肖像,又在旁边排列了60个竹制筷子架,里面装满了长竹签,组成成龙名字中的“龙”字。

Many of Red’s portraits have received international acclaim and widespread media attention, allowing her to put a spotlight on Asia-based figures through her art. Her works are influenced by both her Malaysian upbringing and her current surroundings. Her time in Shanghai even helped to shape her unique style by opening up her world to a plethora of readily available raw materials. Most recently, Red has created series of #flowerbombing collage style portraits, which celebrate an admirable group of women in arts and entertainment, including the likes of Kiko Mizuhara, Liu Wen, Michelle Obama, Emma Watson and Alicia Keys.
