Kodak Color Plus 200 – KCP2 is the latest addition to VSCO’s line of Film X presets. Widely thought to be Kodak’s Kodacolor VR 200 from the 1980s in new packaging, Kodak Color Plus 200 has an authentic vintage look and is still available as an affordable 35mm film. With its low contrast, low color saturation, and slightly warm inclination, KCP2 is well suited for a wide variety of subjects, but especially excels at casual snapshots and portraiture.

In this tutorial, we will look at ways of creating a cinematic look in your photographs and find inspiration from the community.

Edit with Grain & Contrast / 編輯颗粒和对比度

First, make the initial edits to the photograph and its color. Focus on making adjustments using the grain tool and the contrast tool. These two tools will help mimic the look of a movie shot on film. Try adding a bit of film grain to an image to give the feeling of movement and imperfection. Next, decrease the contrast to take out some of the vivid, bright color and give the photo a subtle look.

Edit with Crop & Borders / 边框和调整比例

After making the initial edits to the color of an image we will look at how Crop and Borders can create a cinematic scene. Movies have a distinct wide aspect ratio, the most notable being 2.35:1. This distinct look came from the invention of the CinemaScope anamorphic lens, which was created in the 50s and resulted in a new dimension for experiencing a movie. To mimic this look, we will use the Crop tool to change the dimensions of an image. Experiment with different aspect ratio’s and sizes and find one that fits your image best. Finally, add a black border to frame your newly transformed picture.

The rule of thirds equally divides a frame with two horizontal and two vertical lines. The resulting overlay is used for composing and arranging subjects within the image. This technique is helpful for creating images that guide viewers through various parts of the image, but it is by no means a rule of law.

Breaking the rules and finding the exceptions can be a great process for discovering new looks that stand out from the crowd. Here are a few ways you can reframe your image without using the rule of thirds.

Rather than using guides that split the frame into thirds, try using one line along each axis to create a single intersection point at the very center of the frame. This creates a much more symmetrical layout, especially when used with square images.

This also tends to create areas of negative space within the image, which itself can turn into a creative tool. Try this if you want to experiment with a more minimal look.

Stretching subjects across the entire frame is another way of breaking free of the rule of thirds. If you have a subject that repeats a pattern, or if you’re wanting to abstract a subject by getting in close, try allowing it to fill the image from edge to edge. This creates a singular visual plane that forces the viewer to seek out points of reference.

Scenes from a Breakup 劫后余生的恋人们

Like sketches from a love story, Korean illustrator Kang Jiyeon‘s drawings are intimate, suggestive, and poetic. She draws everyday scenes in large blocks of varying colors, with men and women who are sometimes shown in profile and sometimes have their backs to us. Even if we can’t see their expressions, the loneliness hangs visibly in the air, with a hint of sorrow. “All men and women in the world fall in love and split up,” Kang says. “The Romancer focuses mainly on expressing these two states of human relationships: loving and separation.”


她的画像一部轻描淡写的言情小说,亲密,隐晦,充满诗意。韩国插画家 Kang Jiyeon 用深浅不一的大面积色块将画布分割成一片片日常风景。画中的男女时而微露侧脸,时而完全转过身去,即使看不见表情,空气中依然阅读得出他们的落寞,以及那一丝浅尝即止的伤心。“世界上的男人和女人相恋又分离。《The Romancer》这一个系列想要表达的就是这两种人与人之间的动态关系。”

A scroll through Kang’s works on Instagram shows that she used to use simple black and white lines to depict love, like a doting couple interacting with each other. (In the work with the table lamp on the dresser, the picture on the wall is one of her past pieces.)

But in this series, her theme is separation, and the former happiness has faded into a memory on the wall. Here she uses dense colors to show the loneliness of those who have gone through a breakup. Whether it’s a still life or a figure in profile, her works are full of loneliness and estrangement. “Sometimes I regret changing my style, because it took me so much time and effort,” she says. “But his may also be one of the main reasons this series is one of my favorites.”


在 Instagram 里翻阅 Kang Jiyeon 过去的作品,以前她习惯使用简单的黑白线条去刻画爱情,比如说热恋中的情侣互动等等(像下方有一盏台灯的那幅画中,墙上的画作即是她复制自己过去的一幅作品)。

When I asked Taiwanese illustrator Phoebe Chen why so much of her art is about sex, she paused and thought for a moment, then shrugged. “Sometimes you just can’t explain why you’re drawn to something.”

The women in Chen’s drawings have all kinds of appearances and personalities: some are flirtatious, others are headstrong. Some are restless, while others give themselves over to pleasure. Yet they all accept themselves—and they especially embrace the feelings and desires that are often left unspoken.


当我问到台湾插画家 Phoebe Chen,为何选择将“性”作为自己的创作主题时,她思索了一会儿,回答“有时候你就是没办法说明自己为什么会受某些事物吸引。”

“As a woman, and as an artist whose work is about desire, sometimes I get people looking at my art and thinking I’m ‘easy’ or ‘loose,'” says Chen. “It’s frustrating. A lot of people in our society still think that any woman who’s in control of her sexuality is a slut.”

On paper she lets her desire run free and unbridled. These sexually suggestive—not to say explicit—illustrations are an outlet for Chen’s imagination, a way for her to strike back at society. After all, it’s a society that enforces silence around sex and desire.

“The women in my drawings are rebellious-looking, like they don’t care what others think, but that’s actually the opposite of what I’m like,” she says. “I think that in today’s society, there’s hardly anyone who hasn’t wanted to escape from their own life at some point. Luckily I can draw, and through my art I can fully express the things I love and the way I want to be. Maybe I just like naked bodies and the aesthetics of desire. What’s wrong with that?”


“身为一个女性,又是以情欲为主题的创作者,偶尔会有人只看过我的作品,就会把我和‘随便’、‘一定很骚’等印象连结在一起。这让我很挫折,社会上似乎还是有不少人把拥有自主情欲的女性和淫乱划上等号。”

Léon: The Professional (1994) /《这个杀手不太冷》

If you had to describe each of your favorite movies with a color, what colors would you choose?

It’s a question that’s often on Chu Sin-hang’s mind. As a serious movie buff, this Hong Kong-based illustrator enjoys reimagining her favorite movies as Pantone colors. Then, using these colors as canvases, she recreates iconic scenes with strokes of black and white. The project began in 2017, when she put Léon: The Professional (1994) on a backdrop of Apple Green, and it’s kept growing ever since. As of today, Chu’s FILMTONE series features over 100 charming illustrations of movies across all genres.“The FILMTONE series is basically just my way of sharing the movies that I love with others,” she says.

We caught up with Chu one afternoon and asked her to recommend some of her favorite films for different moods and occasions in the hopes of uncovering some hidden gems that might have slipped under our radar.

I’d recommend Chungking Express (1994) by Wong Kar-wai. It’s about the melancholy and loneliness of living in a large metropolis. The film was shot in locations with frenetic urban energy, like Lan Kwai Fong and Tsim Sha Tsui, so the audience can get a taste of Hong Kong’s hustle and bustle, as well as its beauty.

I’d pick Lost in Translation (2003). Watching Bob (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) deal with ennui and culture shock in Tokyo always pulls me into a state of jet-lag-like dreaminess. This mood makes me feel out of place and exhausted—and hence, cures my insomnia.

Although the ending is sad, the movie reminds us there’s plenty of joy along the way. I think this movie might, to a certain extent, soothe a broken heart.

It messed with my head and made me question myself. What if every moment of my life was being monitored for public entertainment? What if my existence was a lie? What if the society I lived in was a conspiracy?

You’ve reminded me of a film I enjoyed a lot but haven’t drawn yet! I’d probably bring Cast Away (2000) by Robert Zemeckis. If I were stuck on a desert island, Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) and Wilson the volleyball would definitely be my best companions. This movie would be a lifesaver. It would also help me deal with loneliness and mental anguish.

What Does Your Body Sound Like? 当身体唱起歌来

It’s a show the audience itself can’t help being a part of: in a dark, silent room, performers in tights lie down on a sort of bed and flail their limbs in an improvised way. Gradually a series of fluctuating, billowing images appear on a screen behind them as a dream-like music begins to sound. Everyone is drawn into a surreal ceremony until the performers leave the stage, and viewers turn around and look at the corporeal landscape evolving before their eyes.

This is Soundscape of Body. Transforming bodies’ shapes into image and sound, it seeks to let us see the body’s music, to hear the body’s terrain.


这是一场所有观众都没办法置身事外的表演:在一片寂静的黑暗中,表演者身穿打底服,或是平躺,或是即兴地舞动身体和四肢。此时,荧幕上逐渐出现一道道变幻多端的曲线波澜,耳里传来一阵阵如梦似幻的乐音,所有人仿佛被带入一场超现实的观礼仪式。直到表演者离开舞台,转身回望眼前这一片衍生自自己身体的风景。

这是《大音希声》,通过转换身体的形状,它想让你看见身体的声音、听见身体的风景。

The Chinese name of the performance, Da Yin Xi Sheng, comes from chapter 41 of the Dao De Jing. It literally means “great sound, soft voice” but might be interpreted to mean the louder a sound is, the harder it is to hear.

“Your body is like a mystery. You can see it, but you never hear it. Through this work, I want you to hear the sound of your own body,” says Keith Lam, whose creative team, Dimension Plus, is behind Soundscape of Body. Lam is a Hong Kong-based new media artist who Neocha has written about before. This time he collaborated with his group’s coder, Seth Hon, to create this piece, which won a special honor at the 2018 Golden Pin Awards for the Best Designs of the Year.


《大音希声》取名自《道德经》第四十一章,意思是愈是宏亮的声音,愈是听不见。

“身体像是一道谜。你看得见,却从没有听过它。通过这件作品,我想让你听见它的声音。”Keith Lam 说。Keith 和他的团队 Dimension Plus 是《大音希声》的幕后创作者。在我们过去的报导中,曾介绍过这位来自香港的新媒体艺术家。这一次,他协同团队中的编码师 Seth Hon(韩家俊)完成的此件创新作品,获得了 2018金点设计奖“年度最佳设计奖”的殊荣。

“It’s a completely new and innovative way to create original music from our body,” said the judges. “It uses science to communicate how our body can contribute to society even after our passing.” Among the over 5000 works in this year’s competition, 37 took home awards. Others include Mist Encounter, a water-themed art installation made out of recyclable materials, and The Affairs, a new print newspaper.

This year’s awards were full of works that showed humanitarian concerns and an awareness of environmental sustainability. Each year the selection shows that design means more than just creating beautiful things. We live in an age where the objects around us become obsolete too quickly. Good design should do more than show creative thought—equally important is whether it can curb the waste of resources and remain “future-proof” as time passes.

Can people’s bodies become obsolete?

That’s a question that Lam, as he was conceiving this piece, wanted audiences to think about. He took up the project on commission for the Body Donation Programme at the Hong Kong University Medical School, which every year works with artists to create art. It aims to increase the public’s awareness of body donation and get them to think about the nature of bodies and the meaning of life—and the possibility that even after death, a body’s value can be extended.

When taking on this project, Lam did a lot of homework. One sentence he heard from Chan Lap Ki, an anatomy professor at the medical school, stuck with him: “the organs of the human body are as beautiful as any landscape.” He kept thinking about what it meant. A landscape isn’t necessarily just something you see, it can also be something you hear. What if you could make everyone’s body become a tune?


而人的身体,是否也能不被时间淘汰?

这是当 Keith 受到香港大学医学院的遗体捐赠计划“大体老师”的委托,在构想作品的同时,希望带给观众思考的问题。每一年,大体老师计划都会委托艺术家去创作,希望能借此提升大众对于捐赠遗体的认知,以及激发观众思考何谓生命的本质与身体的意义——即使在死后,身体的价值是否有延续下去的可能。

在接到这个项目之后,Keith 做了许多功课。当他从医学院的解剖学教授陈立基先生的访谈中,听到了这一句话“人体器官就好像风景一样漂亮。”时,便心心念念着这话里的含义。风景不一定是通过观看,也可以通过聆听来欣赏。如果让每个人的身体,都成为一章乐曲呢?

Soundscape of Body uses a parallel motion scanner that detects the distance from the performer’s body and uses a special coding technology to turn these data into images and music. The closer one gets to the sensor, the lower the sound gets. “All the performers are improvising, and we can’t tell them ahead of time what to do,” Lam explains. “So each performance is unique.”

After the performance ends, the audience can also get up on stage and scan their own bodies, and the results are anonymously uploaded to a website. “The interactive part got more popular than I expected. Audiences would wait to get on stage and have their own body scanned, for that may be the first time they listen to music from their own body.”

“The up-and-down motion of our body is naturally beautiful—it has rhythm and pitch,” says Lam. “Listening to our body as a musical score, we can rediscover it from a totally different perspective, and even rethink life and death.”

《大音希声》在操作设计上,运用了一支平行移动的扫描器,侦测与表演者身体之间的距离,再通过特殊的编码技术,将这些数据转换成影像和音乐。越接近感应器,转化出来的声音就越低音。“所有表演者都是即兴演出,我们不会事先告诉他们应该怎么做。所以每一场表演都是独一无二。”

在表演结束后的体验环节中,观众也可以上台扫描自己的身体,转化出来的结果会以匿名的形式上载到网站。“这部分的互动超乎我们想像的热络,常常是很多人挤在前面等着上台让自己的身体被扫描,这可能是他们第一次‘听见’自己的身体。”

“身体的高低起伏本身就是一种自然的美,是节奏和音调。”Keith说,“当我们的身体作为乐谱,在听的同时,就能从一个完全不同的视角去重新发现我们的身体,进而,想到生与死。”

F is for Feminist 一本没有墨水,也没有纸张的书

Girls Gone Wild is a zine about radical feminism that has neither ink nor paper. Instead, Indonesian artist Claudia Akhsa has sewn together this text with a needle and thread.


《Girls Gone Wild》是一本关于“激进女性主义”的独立杂志书。可是它既没有墨水,也没有纸张,来自印尼雅加达的艺术家 Claudia Akhsa 选择用一针一线,缝制出这些相关的篇章。

Radical feminism is a school of thought based on the view that women’s oppression is the foundation of all forms of exploitation.

Akhsa’s handmade book has sixteen pages. With a gentle but objective tone, she uses text and image to discuss radical feminism’s history, introduce its representative figures (and some of their well-known lines), and explain key terms such as “patriarchy” and “sisterhood.”

The work was Akhsa’s final project at Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore, from which she recently graduated. Titled Feisty Girls, the project included the inaugural issue of Girls Gone Wild (“What the ‘F'”), along with a series of illustrations. When she first set about choosing a topic, Akhsa drew on her longstanding interest in politics, and her anger at the unfair treatment women encountered. “After doing some research, I realized many people either don’t understand what radical feminism is or have a negative perception of it. That’s when I first decided to create a zine introducing radical feminism.”


激进女性主义(Radical Feminism)是女性主义的其中一个派别,最基本的观点是:女性所受的压迫,是所有剥削形式中最深刻的。

这一本由 Claudia 手工制作的刺绣书,总共有十六页。内容以和缓而客观的语气,图文并茂地讲述了其历史、代表人物及名言,还有和女性主义相关的词语,比如父权制、姐妹之谊等等。

而这其实是 Claudia 在新加坡就读拉萨尔艺术学院的毕业作品。这个名为“Feisty Girls”(意为“勇敢好胜的姑娘”)的项目里,就包含了首期刺绣书《Girls Gone Wild》(主题为“What the ‘F’”)和一系列的插图创作。当初在选择项目主题时,Claudia 提到自己对政治一直都很感兴趣,从小到大,经常对女性面临到的不公平感到愤怒。“经过一连串的资料搜集后,我发现很多人要么是不理解何为‘激进女性主义’,要么就对它持有负面印象。所以我想通过这本书,告诉大家什么才是真正的‘激进女性主义’。”

“Since the zine is about radical feminism, why not go radical and out of the norm?”

By choosing such a unconventional form, Akhsa had to sacrifice a lot of time. It took her eight months altogether, most of her last year at college. She didn’t sleep well during that time, and her grades suffered. “Instead of making it easy to produce, I made it more delicate and difficult,” she says. “I chose embroidery because stitching has always been related to women and stereotypes of women.”

So far there’s only one “issue” of Girls Gone Wild, and there’s only a single copy in existence. Akhsa says issues two and three are still planned, but since she started work after graduation, she just doesn’t have enough time.


“既然主题是关于激进女性主义,何不把形式也做得激进一点?”

Claudia 选择如此非传统的制作方式,时间是必须牺牲的。她总共花费了八个月,占去她大学最后一年的多数时间,每天不能好好睡觉,还为此失去了一些学分。但在看到成果后,她说一切辛苦都值得了。“我不想让它太容易就被生产出来,所以就选了更为精细和困难的方式——刺绣。”她说,“并且自古以来,针线活就和女性相关,可以说它也象征着加诸在女性身上的刻板印象。”

目前《Girls Gone Wild》只有第一期,全世界也只有一本。(Claudia 向我们说,其实第二、三期已经在规划中,但毕业后踏入工作,时间实在不够啊!)

The other portion of the Feisty Girls project consists of a series of illustrations that are also reflections and questions about feminism. Akhsa first focused on girls who consider themselves feminists, giving them a survey about themselves and putting their responses and the emotions they revealed into bold, bright illustrations.

She always takes an original in approach in her art, and this time she drew illustrations of what she considers feminists for a new age onto old storybooks whose main characters are girls. It’s a graphic juxtaposition of past and present depictions of women.

“All feminists have gone through different experiences in their life that have made them who their are. I wanted to tell people how every feminist is different, and how different feminism is now from the past.”


另外在《Feisty Girls》项目里的插图创作,也是一系列关于女性主义的反思和诘问。Claudia 首先针对了那些自认为女性主义者的女孩们,进行一项关于自己的调查,并将她们的回答和从中表露出的多种情绪,呈现在这些大胆、鲜艳的插画里。

关于创作的手法,她一向独创新意。这一次,她把从自己视角出发,描绘出新一世代女性主义者的插图,画在同样以女孩为主角的老旧故事书上,将古今对于女性的不同刻画,有趣且直观地并列出来。

“每个女权主义者的人生经验都不一样,这使她们成为了今日的自己。我想让大家知道,每个女权主义者都不尽相同,而每个时期的女权主义,也都是不一样的。”

China in Black & White 删去色彩后,一片寂静的中国

Camera slung across her back, self-taught photographer Qiang Jing has criss-crossed Gansu, Chongqing, Beijing, and Sichuan, eventually ending up in Yunnan, a province of captivating beauty in southern China. In her photos, she drains the color from China’s street scenes, leaving only a desolate black and white. Even the country’s panoramic landscapes look less magnificent through her lens.


她带着相机,走过甘肃、重庆、北京、成都等地方,最终落脚在云南这片恍若仙境的土地。从大学开始自学摄影的强婧,在她的照片里,中国日常街景的颜色都被删去,留下一片略显萧瑟的黑与白。此时,再辽阔的山河,看上去也不那么壮丽了。

Qiang Jing was born in Gansu province and now lives in Kunming, a city she didn’t choose at random: “I like the dazzling sun here, it takes me back to my childhood. Kunming has a brilliant blue sky and soft, billowy clouds. The city moves at an unhurried pace, and locals are the salt of the earth—simple, honest people.”

But the year-round warmth hasn’t brightened her shots. Instead, she captures scenes of ruins and debris that seem caught amid the constant changes of the world, steeped in both life’s bitterness and its joy. Their immense silence draws you in, speaking more eloquently than any words.


强婧生于中国甘肃省,现定居于云南昆明,会选择留在这里并不是偶然, “我喜欢这里灿烂的阳光,让我有种恍然回到小时候的气息。这里有蔚蓝的天空,云卷云舒,还有城市里慵懒的步调和没什么心眼、老实憨厚的当地人。”

可是,这里常年的温暖却未照亮她的景框,取而代之,是烟消云散后的残破景象。之中透露出一丝穿梭于人间冷暖、品尝到悲欢离合的细末余味,叫人深深沉浸在这画面制造的巨大静默里,无声胜有声。

“I take my camera and wander aimlessly through the streets, snapping photos of things that resonate with my current mood.” Her specialty, street photography, relies on individual emotions, because she doesn’t just document outdoor scenes from an objective angle. It’s more personal.

“Photography, for me, is an expression of inner feelings, an emotional outlet, as well as a form of therapy. What I shoot is just my inner state, and that’s why I enjoy taking pictures. On streets full of uncertainty and conflict, I find a peace, a unity with myself.”


“我拿着相机在街上漫无目的地游荡,拍下那些和当下内在的我引起共振的事物。” 她擅长的街头摄影,是要带着浓郁的个人情感去拍的,因为她记录的不仅仅是从客观视角出发的外在景象,更多的,还有自己的内心。

“摄影对于我是一种抒发内心感受的行为,一种情绪的宣泄,也是一种自我疗愈的方式。我拍下的即是我内心的样子,这也正是我享受摄影的原因,在充满不确定性和各种冲突的街头,找到一丝平静、和与自我的统一。”

Ever since she first began taking pictures, Qiang has made a habit of going out shooting on a semi-regular basis. She uses black and white so no colors will interfere with her vision—it’s the format that best expresses her feelings of solitude.

Set against the vastness of the world, people are insignificant specks, and her photos convey this sharp sense of loneliness and isolation. “I hold my breath and press the button to open the shutter: for me, photography is a sort of ritual. It’s like I’m mourning the passing of an instant, of everything that’s vanished around me, a reality that actually existed and will never exist again.”


从开始拍照到现在,强婧一直保持着一段时间就会固定上街拍摄的习惯。之所以选择黑白摄影,是因为没有颜色去扰动视觉,是最能表达她内心的孤独感的形式。

对比这个偌大的世界,人不过是渺小的客体。从她的照片里,的确感受得到这一股强烈的孤寂与脱离感。“吸气屏息,按下快门——对我来说,拍摄像是一种祭祀仪式,仿佛在追悼过去每一刻时间的逝去,那些从我身上消逝的一切,真实存在过、现又不复存在的事实。”

“Behind my photos, there’s a story about the loneliness of growing up, about love and hate, and ultimately about letting go,” she says. She puts all her pent-up feelings into her photography and creates a series of images that brim with emotion.

The darkness in Qiang’s pictures coexists with the light: neither is possible without the other. “Kunming is gradually having an effect on me,” she says. “Just as plants grow toward the sun, maybe I can eventually break free from my former melancholy and give voice to a tougher, stronger version of myself.” Now that she’s mastered darkness and light, her journey as a photographer goes on.


最后,强婧向我们娓娓道来,“在我摄影的背后,是一个关于成长过程中所感受到的孤独,以及爱与恨,最后放手的故事。” 她将长久以来累积的情绪通通投注在摄影里,成就了这一张张承载饱满情感的影像。

但事实上,强婧照片里的黑暗,与光亮永远都是并存的,两者是缺少了彼此即不成立的存在。她说 “昆明这座城市,正慢慢影响着我。仿佛植物会向阳生长一样,渐渐地,也许我能从最初的忧郁中挣脱出来,表达一个更有韧性、更坚强的自己。” 掌握了光和暗,她的摄影之旅将继续下去。
