In this fast-paced world, it is common to quickly snap a photo rather than document with creative intent. Instead of capturing a subject from one vantage point and moving on, try photographing a scene from opposite perspectives.

This challenge will require you to slow down, evaluate what you see, and think about your composition. Get innovative and use the following tips to photograph opposite viewpoints.

Capture your subject + what your subject sees / 捕捉你的主体+主体看到了什么

After photographing someone or something, move to put yourself in their place. Then take a photo that replicates their view. This will give the audience looking at your photos a more complete understanding of the setting and make them feel a part of the experience.

* Tip — Leave clues to let the viewer know the photos are related. There are many creative ways to go about this. In the above image, the photo on the right was shot through the yellow lens of the glasses to ‘truly’ see the scene from the person’s perspective.



* Tip — Take time to come up with a concept and plan the shoot before it happens. Not all locations photograph well from both directions, so do a bit of scouting ahead of time.


* Tip — Shoot with a partner. Find someone who is willing to be patient and hold a pose while you photograph them from both sides. The shot you have in mind may not be obvious to your model, so be sure to give clear directions.


Capture opposite vantage points / 捕获反向的有利位置

Explore the many ways you can document a scene — above and below, in front and behind, from outside looking in and vice versa.

* Tip — Additional tools, like a selfie stick or a drone, can make shooting from opposite perspectives easier and allow you to experiment with varying distances. If you don’t have those options, look for opportunities around you that provide different viewpoints, like a balcony or a bridge. In the photo above, a ladder was used to capture the model tying her shoe from different angles.



*Tip — When applying this practice to street photography, try to look ahead and anticipate potential moments as much as possible. People and objects are constantly moving, so you will need to react quickly when transitioning between one point of view to the other.

Look Into the Light / 直视亮光

It’s not uncommon to completely avoid photographing directly into your main source of light. This helps prevent unpredictable exposures and harsh contrast, but it’s also ideal for creating lens flare or glare. Placing a subject between you and the light can help you find that sweet spot where it bends and streaks the most.

Experimenting with the sun when it is low in the sky is a great place to start, but artificial lights can also create unique results. Always try different angles to see how it changes the final image.


Find Reflections / 寻找反射

Flare is caused by bright rays of light bouncing between the layers of glass inside of your lens. Finding a reflective surface brings this effect from inside your lens, out onto surfaces within your composition – creating glare. A window, glass table, or even a puddle can reflect light that you can use to create dreamy streaks and stars.


Make it Subtle / 再细致一点

When used, elements of flare and glare don’t always have to be central to the composition. Trying to control the size of the streaks by shifting your perspective is helpful, but even simply placing the light along the edge of the frame can help create the effect you want without being too distracting.


Editing Tip / 小技巧

Using the Highlights tool can bring back some tone to otherwise completely blown out areas of flare or glare. This helps reduce the extreme contrast and makes the light feel less harsh.

Low contrast editing can help create a washed-out feel that preserves detail with subtle shifts in hue and tone. If you want to balance out harsh, contrasty light or a new look to try, these three tips show different approaches to creating low contrast looks of your own.

1 — The Valence preset pack / 使用 Valence 滤镜预设包

The Valence (V1–V8) preset pack was made with low contrast in mind. Each one has a unique tone and feel, often adding a soft, colored tint to images. V1 creates a cool blue look, V4 is pink, and V8 adds warmer tones. If you want something more subtle, try starting with V5, or reduce the strength of a preset by tapping it again after applying it to an image.

2 — Contrast and Tone tools / 对比和调工具

The Contrast tool is an obvious choice for experimenting with these looks. Try reducing Contrast a little at a time and combine it with the Tone tool. Try to preserve as much detail as you can in both the dark and bright areas.


The Tone tool gives you control over both shadows and highlights. Low contrast images are known for maintaining detail across both bright highlights, as well as dark shadows. Incrementally increasing these sliders can help save these areas of detail.


3 — Character and Film X / Film X 系列滤镜和字符调整工具

If you want a low contrast look that is reminiscent of vintage film, using Character and Film X is your best bet. By using the tools mentioned before in conjunction with reduced Character, you can achieve unique low contrast looks. To access Character, tap on a Film X preset again after applying it to an image. For this approach, try starting with FS1 (Fuji Superia 100) or KP3 (Kodak Portra 160VC).

Kodak Color Plus 200 – KCP2 is the latest addition to VSCO’s line of Film X presets. Widely thought to be Kodak’s Kodacolor VR 200 from the 1980s in new packaging, Kodak Color Plus 200 has an authentic vintage look and is still available as an affordable 35mm film. With its low contrast, low color saturation, and slightly warm inclination, KCP2 is well suited for a wide variety of subjects, but especially excels at casual snapshots and portraiture.

The rule of thirds equally divides a frame with two horizontal and two vertical lines. The resulting overlay is used for composing and arranging subjects within the image. This technique is helpful for creating images that guide viewers through various parts of the image, but it is by no means a rule of law.

Break the Rules / 打破规则

Breaking the rules and finding the exceptions can be a great process for discovering new looks that stand out from the crowd. Here are a few ways you can reframe your image without using the rule of thirds.


1 — Align Center /  对齐中心

Rather than using guides that split the frame into thirds, try using one line along each axis to create a single intersection point at the very center of the frame. This creates a much more symmetrical layout, especially when used with square images.

2 — Work the Edges / 运用边角

By turning your attention to the edges of the frame, you can create unique compositions that diverge from more traditional approaches. This also tends to create areas of negative space within the image, which itself can turn into a creative tool. Try this if you want to experiment with a more minimal look.

3 — Fill the Frame / 填满画面

Stretching subjects across the entire frame is another way of breaking free of the rule of thirds. If you have a subject that repeats a pattern, or if you’re wanting to abstract a subject by getting in close, try allowing it to fill the image from edge to edge. This creates a singular visual plane that forces the viewer to seek out points of reference.

The White Balance tool is best used for making broad color adjustments. If you use a preset that creates a strong color cast, or if you just captured an image where the colors feel a bit off, you can use the White Balance tool to create a more accurate feeling tone.

Looking at Color / 观察色彩

The White Balance tool gets its name for its ability to make sure the white hues in an image display without any off tints or casts. By balancing for known white or light gray tones, other colors will often fall into place. With this in mind, look for a reference point in your image that you can confidently ‘match’ by making adjustments with the White Balance tool.

顾名思义,白平衡工具就是用来调整图像中的白色调,使其不带有任何其它色调。通过调整白色调或浅灰色调, 其它的颜色也会获得相应的调整。因此,不妨先在图片中找一个参考点,然后就可以更有把握地使用白平衡工具进行相应的调整。

Finding Balance / 寻找平衡

Once you find your reference point, try to identify what might be making it feel off or how you may want to intentionally shift the color.

Is it too warm and yellow, or too cool and blue?

Use the Temperature slider.

一旦你找到参考点, 试着找出色调感觉不合适的原因,想想你应该如何有目的地调整色彩。



Is there a green tint, or does everything feel a little too pink?

Use the Tint slider。



By working with these four colors, you can use the White Balance tool to correct almost any kind of light. Working in small increments, use the sliders to gradually shift the color to a point that matches what you had in mind. By practicing this process, you’ll soon be able to spot easy adjustments and quickly eliminate color casts, especially in tricky lighting conditions.


Jennifer Bin’s Recipes

Jennifer Bin is a Shanghai-based designer and photographer who offers a different perspective of our modern world through her lens. Her unique editing approach transforms familiar cityscapes into surreal scenes that often more closely resemble stills from a cyberpunk blockbuster than real life. Recently, we had her share one of her VSCO Recipes with us.

Recently, Bin has opted for a fairly minimal editing process and prefers to adjust color temperatures even prior to taking the shot. This allows her to do fairly minimal work once the images are imported into VSCO. For this Recipe, she uses the C5 preset (at a strength of 4.0) and applies the finishing touches with minor adjustments to temperature (-2.7), fade (+1.4), and sharpening (+0.8).

来自上海的设计师和摄影师 Jennifer Bin 透过镜头,以独特的视角定格当今的世界。她独特的编辑方式,将人们熟悉的城市景观变幻成超现实的场景,明明是来自日常的场面,看上去却像是赛博朋克风(Cyberpunk)电影中的剧照。近期,她和我们分享了一款她使用 VSCO 时的私人调色配方。

Bin cites the likes of author William Gibson’s Neuromancer, director Scott Ridley’s Blade Runner, and animator Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira as inspirations, but she doesn’t see her images as fictional portrayals of our world – she believes the future envisioned by these past works of science-fiction have already snuck up on us and her images are proof. “The world that we’re living in now is a heterotopia,” Bin tells us. “We can see both the utopian and dystopian elements of sci-fi from yesteryears. There are promising technologies and breakthroughs that can be seen as utopian, but at the same time, they can easily have dark applications or result in unwanted, unforeseen consequences.”

Bin regards editing as an essential part of her creative process as a photographer. While composition and framing are important factors, editing is another way for her to direct the viewer’s attention towards certain elements in each frame. “When you manipulate the colors of an image, it changes its overall mood as well,” she adds. “The use of color is key to invoking the right emotions.”

From minimal edits where much of the work is already done in-camera to a complete reimagining of an image’s original colors, Bin repeatedly demonstrates a daringness to expand her creative boundaries and defy expectations.

Dear Shanghai, I Love You

Using the powerful presets and tools that come with VSCO X, we’ve put together a photo essay that showcases Shanghai through our eyes. This is Neocha’s tribute to a city that we keep falling in love with over and over again.


When most people think of Shanghai, certain sights might immediately come to mind: the lively crowds on the riverside promenade; the hyper-futuristic skyscrapers rising above the Lujiazui skyline; and a legion of mopeds, bicycles, and cars whizzing every which way through downtown. While these sights are representative of Shanghai in their own way, for many, the allure of the city lies in its internationalism, open-mindedness, and reputation as a place of endless opportunities. But beyond these obvious qualities, the city’s rich history and traditional roots form the Shanghai that we know and love.

In our eyes, Shanghai is a petite and elegant city. Being the most populated city in China, some might find “petite” as an absurd adjective to describe the megalopolis. Even prior to Shanghai’s frenzied development, land was considered to be a treasured commodity. This is reflected in the Shanghai’s older streets, which look quite dainty when compared to the streets of other Chinese cities. Many of Shanghai’s older buildings are designed with a similar mindset of maximizing the most of a given space and are equally charming in their “petiteness,” such as the wedge-shaped Wukang Mansion in the French Concession. However, despite limitations, many of Shanghai’s older buildings were constructed with attention to details: Buildings from the Republic of China period best represent this, with Art Deco designs, ornate wood and stone carvings, and beautiful terrazzo flooring being some of the city’s most overlooked gems.

上海是“小”且“精”的。因为它从开埠以来就是寸土寸金之地,街道不宽、空间不大,一些老建筑甚至就见缝插针地矗立在两条逐渐相交的马路上,形成了独特的三角船型立面。坐落在法租界的“武康大楼”就是代表性建筑之一。虽然大部分老建筑的空间本身十分逼仄,但细节之处却是非常之精致。甚至在许多建于民国时期、Art Deco风格的建筑上,如今依旧可见细腻的砖雕木雕及整洁的水磨石地。

However, the true essence of Shanghai can be best observed in the city’s shikumen lanes or longtangs, which are narrow alleyways that often can only fit two people shoulder to shoulder. Residental areas like these are abuzz with activity: Recyclers are busy at work, collecting and sorting out salvaged goods along the street; vendors lay out a selection of fresh produce and barter with passersby; and repurposed homes serve as convenience stores, hawking everyday essentials to nearby residents.

In these close-packed living quarters, the distinction between public and private is often blurred as neighbors are constantly exposed to each other’s lives. It might seem bothersome to know what your neighbors are arguing about or having for dinner, but for many locals, these living conditions have ultimately contributed to a strong sense of community.

To this day, many of the older generation Shanghainese are content with a traditional lifestyle filled with simple pleasures. When the weather is fair, they can be seen hanging laundry out to dry on streets and from balconies; tending to their beloved potted plants; or simply being out and about, soaking up the sun, casually knitting, and chatting the afternoon away.

With much of the cityscape and local lifestyle still interwoven with traditions, it’s to be expected that the regional cuisine similarly follows suit. The four breakfast staples, dubbed as si da jin gang (or “Four Heavenly Kings” in English), is comprised of soy milk, Chinese fried churros, baked pancakes with sesame, and stuffed sticky rice rolls. Everything, with the exception of the fried churros, can be made sweet or savory. Another popular snack choice is Shanghai-style tea eggs, which are made with aniseed, sugar, cinnamon, soy sauce, and of course, tea leaves. For dessert, steamed rice cake, garnished with strips of sugar-soaked papaya and orange peels, is a popular with locals. While many of these culinary delights have been glorified under the pen of legendary author Eileen Chang, some have become increasingly harder to find. As the city marches towards the future, a collective nostalgia battles on against the unforgiving nature of time to keep these Shanghainese flavors and memories alive.

The Journey Out West

Shanghai-based travel photographer Scott Turner likes to document real life, often taking an anthropological approach to his work. He regards people and their lives to be the most rewarding and challenging subject to photograph. In his travels, he admits that he likes to go deep in the places that he visits, opting to stay longer to really invest himself and understand more about the local culture. Avoiding areas that are touristy, he prefers instead to visit less popular destinations, places that Scott says “usually have the most open people and the most interesting stories”.

Scott has lived in Shanghai for two years now, and has visited many of the major metropolises in China. But what he is most curious about are what he calls “the spaces in between”. He plans to spend some time to explore some of the smaller cities and towns in China, as well as other remote parts of Asia in the coming year, and potentially make a book about it. He has been to Xinjiang, the far west region of China, Kyrgyzstan, Turkestan, as well as India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. For him, the region is multifaceted, complex, and wild. “These places are already widely photographed,” Scott says, “so coming up with something new there can be challenging.”

On his way to Kyrgyzstan, Scott passed through Kashgar, the westernmost city in China, located in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. A former outpost on the Silk Road, its history stretches back 2,000 years, and today is known for its famous bazaar, a bustling and vibrant daily market. Some parts of the old city, Scott describes, almost felt like scenes that were straight out of Aladdin, while other parts of the city appeared to be undergoing extensive development and were being rebuilt.


It was at the end of 2013 when Scott quit his job as an engineer and decided to travel around Asia for a year. The main reason behind this was because he just wanted to get out of his nine to five routine, explore the world more, and really work on his travel photography. During his travels, Scott did what was probably the wildest thing that he had ever done in his life, which was buy a horse from a local livestock market in Kyrgyzstan and ride it through the mountains by himself for a month. Prior to this experience, he had never even ridden a horse before.


While up in the mountains, Scott met a few Kyrgyz shepherds. After his return, he spent some time talking to a few of his Kyrgyz friends about what he had seen and found out that the shepherds had played an important role in sustaining the local economy in hard times. For Scott, this was a beautiful story, considering that what he had witnessed was the legacy and heritage of the local culture.


Scott prefers to travel on the ground whenever possible. He says, “traveling slow provides me with an opportunity to observe and connect with the world around me in a way that flying does not.” Both times that he travelled to Kyrgyzstan, he spent three days on a slow train from Shanghai to Kashgar and then crossed the border by foot.


The images that Scott photographed during his travels in Kyrgyzstan now form the basis of his ongoing VSCO Artist Initiative project, which chronicles the situation of the local farming community in the Kyrgyz mountains. Scott notes that there are two distinctly different styles emerging in his work: one is a very graphic travel style which stems from his love of the landscape, while the other is a rougher and more emotionally driven reportage style, reminiscent of photographers like David Alan Harvey. While Scott has always enjoyed both styles, recently he’s been more attracted towards the latter. And in many ways, Scott feels that his VSCO Artist Initiative project is an investigation of this rougher reportage approach.

At the moment, Scott is particularly interested in exploring climate issues, and in creating art photography books on specific subject matters. He is working on a book about a sport in Central Asia called Buzkashi, which translates literally as “goat grabbing” in Persian. The national sport of Afghanistan, Buzkashi is a game in which horse-mounted players attempt to place a headless goat in a goal. While a great deal of documentary reportage has already been done on the subject, Scott is more interested in capturing the emotions and motions of the sport itself, and in a more graphic and abstract way.

Scott aims to complete his VSCO Artist Initiative project by pairing his photo series from his travels in Kyrgyzstan with a more researched editorial about the local shepherding community. His ultimate goal for the project is “to document the lives of the shepherds, and the issues around modern pastoralism in relation to how it affects the lives of the Kyrgyz people today and for the future, as well as celebrate the deep heritage they have as a people group.”
