NANG #4 – In & Out

 

Issue 4 of NANG is dedicated to In & Out. Featuring artists and filmmakers who voluntarily or involuntarily moved outside of their country of origin, this Issue focuses on hyphenated identities and films that exist in the in-between. Inspired by Hamid Naficy’s “accented cinema,” the texts offer a glimpse into what an intercultural genre and films in-transit might look like and whether the de-territorialization of the filmmaker produces certain traits and characteristics that these films share. Ranging from image-led dialogues to in-depth essays, this Issue hopes to serve as a counter to the narrative of hostile simplification that has embroiled the topic of migration in recent years by celebrating the diversity of voices and experiences that the hyphen brings.

NANG #3 – Fiction

 

Dedicated to the topic of fiction, the third issue of NANG pulls attention away from filmmakers and the process of filmmaking, instead casting a spotlight on the watchers of films. Enlisting the help of guest editor Amir Muhammad—an accomplished Malaysian writer, publisher, and filmmaker—Editor-in-Chief Davide Cazarro invites readers to ponder on how movies can take on a life of their own after they’ve been watched. Overall, the issue poses the question, “When we think about a movie we have seen, aren’t we also ‘making (or ‘remaking)’ that movie in the confines of our imagination?”

In the second issue of NANG, “Scars and Death,” the Asian cinema-focused magazine takes a more abstract leap behind the scenes of filmmaking. Korean film critic, publisher, and lecturer Yoo Un-Seong partnered with Filipino filmmaker, writer, and musician John Torres as this issue’s guest editors. Together with the NANG team, they explored the theme of “the death of cinema,” or rather, the changes in cinema, and the real-life suffering involved with making a movie.

NANG #1 – The Beauty of Screenwriting

 

In Thai, nang is the idiomatic word for film or cinema. Generally used in Thailand to refer to any performance that involves light and a screen, the term became the perfect name for a bi-annual print magazine that details budding cinema culture around Asia. The first issue of NANG, “The Beauty of Screenwriting,” covers the often “mysterious and marginalized” profession of screenwriting.
