Living in such a fast-paced age, how many beautiful things do we overlook?

Peony Yip, a Hong Kong-based artist originally from Jamaica, is a close observer of beautiful things. She draws in a clean, graceful style, giving lush flowers, stems, and even fine strands of hair a deft realism.

“Nowadays, I feel as if beautiful things or beauty itself is judged by the amount of ‘likes’ it gets or how much the internet praises it. It is quite saddening,” she says. “I try to make works with subjects that are beautiful to me, and over the years, I’ve taken a deep liking to flowers. I really want to show nature in my pieces as much as I can.” With their meticulously traced lines, Yip’s drawings have a compact energy that leaves viewers marveling at the beauty of flowers bursting into full bloom.


生活在这样一个快节奏的时代里,我们忽视了多少美好的事物呢?

生于牙买加的 Peony Yip,目前于香港定居。作为一个悉心的观察者,她的绘画风格细腻婉约,繁复的花瓣、枝桠,甚至是纤细的发丝,在她的笔触中显得异常真实灵动。

Floating Field 《浮田》道出你的人生和死亡

Taiwanese designer Wu Yi-Hsien understands that uncertainty is the only certainty in life. While initially troubled by this realization, her apprehension soon gave way to a newfound clarity: we’re all in the same boat. Or, as her animated short Floating Field has it, we’re all in our own fish boats. Her unconventional video, selected as a Design Mark winner in the Golden Pin Concept Design Awards, explores how each of us floats through life in search of meaning and purpose.


台湾设计师吴怡娴深信着 “不确定性是生命中唯一的确定性” 。虽然最初受到这种认知的困扰,但很快地,她的担忧即被一种全新的见解取代:我们的处境都是一样的,我们都在自己的船上。或者说,如她的动画短片《浮田》所表达,我们都在自己的 “鱼型船” 上。她极具创意的视频入围了 “2018 金点概念设计奖” 年度最佳设计奖,探讨了我们每个人如何漂流在人生里寻找着意义和目的。

The animation takes place in a mysterious world where a series of amorphous blob characters each live inside or atop a floating fish. The story’s main character is a humble farmer who’s diligently at work planting seeds in hopes of a better tomorrow. As he drifts from scene to scene, he encounters characters of different backgrounds, all of whom are pursuing their own fulfillment. From a rich fish whose inhabitant is bathing in gold coins to a busy fish whose resident is running in place on a hamster wheel, every character is self-absorbed with their own interests and goals.


动画的故事发生在一个神秘的世界。在这个世界里,一些不定形的团状小人居住在 “飘浮鱼” 的内部或上方。故事的主角是一位谦逊的农民,他正在努力耕作,种下种子,期许一个更美好的明天。当他穿梭在不同的场景,来来去去,他也遇到了来自不同背景的人物,这些人的共同点是他们都在汲汲营营于追求自己的成就。从坐拥无数财富的人、到在仓鼠轮子上没日没夜行走的人,每一个角色都有自己的兴趣和目标。

As time passes, the protagonist’s fish starts to age. His work seems to be all for naught as he descends beneath the clouds and is eventually swallowed by a murky black sea in what seems like the film’s ending. But a quote from Lord of the Rings reframes the context of the grim conclusion, reminding viewers that death isn’t necessarily the end. Through death—the death of our old selves, death of our fears, and the death of our insecurities—a new life begins. Moments later, the fish’s inhabitant re-emerges from the currents and steps ashore. He treads onwards, into new, uncharted lands that await exploration. As terrifying as it might be to face the unknown, only when we accept that it’s an inevitable part of existence, can we truly begin to experience all that life has to offer.

Calligraphy in Action 当书法遇上嘻哈文化

Calligraphy’s beauty lies in the energy behind each stroke, and performances that show the motion of the brush bring to light one of the art form’s normally hidden aspects. Mami, a calligraphy artist from Japan, figured this out years ago, and her live calligraphy shows, performed in a kimono, pay tribute to the movement inherent in this tradition.


书法的美丽在于每一笔划背后的能量,而现场书法表演正可以揭示这个通常不被人看到的一面。来自日本的书法艺术家 Mami,在几年前就想到了这一点。她穿着和服现场表演书法,向这个深根在传统里的动态艺术致上敬意。

The idea for calligraphy performances came to her in a very unexpected way. “I was really drawn to the way rappers and DJs were able to express themselves within a culture they liked,” Mami explains. “I wanted to do calligraphy, but I wanted to do it like them. In those days [2010], live painting was just starting to take root in Japanese clubs, so I rode that wave.”

Hip hop’s appeal for her runs even deeper, since graffiti plays an important role in her style. “I’ve liked hip hop since I was 12, and found the graffiti on CD jackets fascinating. And when I was 16, some graffiti suddenly appeared on the road between my house and my calligraphy class. I felt very close to graffiti then,” she recalls. It didn’t take long for her to start drawing a line between them, so to speak.


嘻哈文化对她的影响相当深远,在她的创作中经常出现涂鸦艺术的踪迹。 “从12岁开始,我就很喜欢嘻哈音乐,常常着迷于 CD 封套上的各种涂鸦。当我 16 岁时,在我家和书法课之间的路上突然出现了一些涂鸦,我觉得我和涂鸦又拉近了距离。” 没过多久,她就开始自己动手涂鸦了。

Mami is part of a worldwide network of “calligraffiti” artists who bring together street art and calligraphy. Many of them, like her, developed their styles individually, only later realizing there was a global scene. A couple of years ago, a book titled The Art of Writing Your Name attempted to bring this nebulous scene together, and it featured Mami within its pages.

Her interest in art began very early on. “I started noticing that I could make others happy with the pictures I drew when I was only four years old,” she says. Before age ten, she was already doing calligraphy, which her parents and teachers introduced to her. She went on to study the history of calligraphy at university.


Mami 对艺术的热爱很早就开始了。“当我只有四岁的时候,我就发现我可以让别人对我的画感到满意。”她说。经由她父母和老师给她介绍,Mami 在十岁之前就已经开始学书法了。在大学里,Mami 继续学习了书法史。

Despite her love for the rebellious nature of hip hop and graffiti, Mami has a clear appreciation for tradition. When speaking on the topic, she’s downright poetic: “Tradition is a tree. Its roots don’t change, but as its age-rings multiply, its branches split and its leaves scatter. I would love for my work to become a part of that tree.”


尽管 Mami 热爱叛逆感十足的嘻哈和涂鸦,但她依然喜欢传统文化。谈到这个话题时,她非常有诗意地说道:“传统是一棵树。它的根是不变的。但当它的年轮一圈圈往上增长,树的枝干会裂开,叶子也散开了。我希望我的工作能成为那棵树的一部分。”
