For Tavepong Pratoomwong, street photography’s appeal doesn’t lie in its fleeting nature or its reliance on luck: a picture’s worth depends on whether or not it can make you smile. Through the intensely imaginative lens of this Thai photographer, Bangkok bursts with culture and life, and even the most ordinary streets reveal an absurd side brimming with stories.

Like many of the street-photographer greats, Pratoomwong’s approach to photography is based largely on intuition. He roams the streets in search of interesting scenes: it’s a game of patience until he captures the decisive moment. “Street photography is meditative,” he explains. “As you walk around looking for subjects to shoot, the moment that compels you to press the shutter is a moment when you’re fully connected with yourself. It’s a state of deep focus.”

Pratoomwong doesn’t attempt to document reality with complete fidelity. He instead chooses to revel in the process of photo-making, enjoying the experience of walking about and applying his own creative twist to scenes he encounters. One of the techniques that makes him stand out is “forced perspective,” which makes elements in the foreground or background seem much bigger or smaller than they actually are. Yet everything he shoots is achieved in-camera and unaltered in post-production, save for minor color correction in Lightroom.

Tavepong 并不旨在完全忠实地记录现实。相反,他选择去陶醉在拍摄过程里,去享受行走的经历,并把自己的创意揉杂进他遇到的场景中。让他的作品脱颖而出的,是他独有的“强迫透视法”,这会让相片中前景或背景中的元素看起来比实际情况下大得多,当然也可以小得多。他拍摄的每件事物,都完全仅靠相机实现的,后期过程不会有变化,除了在 Lightroom 里微调下色调。

Pratoomwong’s interest in photography began in college. For a while, he was obsessed with equipment, and this gear-head mentality practically kept him from shooting. Then in 2013, his wife gave him a ticket to Varanasi, India, for their anniversary, and that trip became a turning point for him as a photographer: he once again picked up his camera, seeking to use his own perspective to give scenes a new spin.

Returning home, Pratoomwong joined entered a photography competition called “365 Days in 2014,” organized by StreetPhotoThailand, which forced him to get in the habit of going out shooting every day. “It seemed like such a simple challenge, requiring only a little time each day to take a photo and upload it, but each day turned out to be harder than the last,” he recalls. “After all, you don’t want your latest photo to be worse than the one from the day before. You also don’t want to be repetitive with your shots, so you’ll naturally put in more effort for every new shot.”


回到泰国后,Tavepong 加入了摄影团体 StreetPhotoThailand 组织的活动“365 Days in 2014”,这也让他养成了每天出门拍照的习惯。这个活动看起来很简单,只是每天抽些时间去拍照,接着从中选择一张,贴到平台就好,但实则行动起来一天比一天难,毕竟你不会希望今天拍的照片会低于昨天的标准。而且拍摄的角度也不能重复,所以每天都要更努力地去拍摄创作。他说道。

As Pratoomwong got more and more involved in street photography, he started to get international attention. In 2014, a mere year after his trip, he took first prize at the prestigious Miami Street Photography Festival and was even invited onto the panel of judges in later years. His first photo book, GOOD DAY BAD DAY BUT EVERYDAY, was published in late 2018 and is available for purchase here.

A low-key image can be achieved in most lighting conditions with the right methods. Seek out isolated subjects and any small glimpses of highlights. Emphasize any surrounding shadows for a quiet and intimate feel.

Set the exposure based on the brightest areas in the scene. When framing your photo, tap and drag downwards to set the focus and to control the amount of underexposure for that particular shot.

Editing for low-key shots


Exposure —
 One of the most common ways to make an image darker is done by reducing the exposure. If you shoot in RAW, you can manipulate an even greater deal of detail in your editing process.

Contrast — Depending on the desired outcome, adjust your contrast up or down incrementally. Lowering contrast evens out tones, while increasing contrast makes the difference in values greater, so dark tones get even darker.

Shadows — Try raising your shadows to bring some light back into the darker parts of the image, but not too much.

I Don’t Want You to Know 女孩子的“树洞”

At first glance, the simple lines and shading of Fang Xiaonao‘s comics make them look like any classic Japanese manga. Only a few pages in does it become apparent that they’re all about young women’s experiences, and that they have an exceptionally light and delicate touch. Many of the stories are lifted straight from real life and set down in manga form.

After graduating from the Beijing Film Academy with a degree in animation, Fang went on to Kyoto Seika University to continue studying manga, and today she’s a full-time comic artist in Tianjin, with three published books to her name.


一眼看方小孬的漫画,用色和线条都很简单,像极了从小看的日漫,但几页翻过去,才惊觉这其中塞进了许多女生的小心思,非常细腻温馨。这些场景,很多都是从生活里撷取而来,方小孬用漫画的形式记录着。

毕业于北京电影学院动画艺术专业的她,又赴京都精华大学继续研究漫画绘本,如今已是一个出了三本书的专职漫画家,定居天津。

“I’m a pretty emotional person, and I’ll often be moved by some little thing I notice in my daily life,” Fang says. “For example, when taking the subway to see a friend off at the train station, my imagination will start going into overdrive at the idea of ‘seeing off someone close to me.'” Some of the stories in the comics are directly modeled on these experiences, and looking back over them brings a smile of recognition to her lips. “Putting them on paper, to a certain extent, means storing up the memories.”


“我是个比较多愁善感的人,经常会被生活上观察到的一些细微的小细节触动。”小孬说,“比如坐地铁送闺蜜去火车站,就会因为送重要的人去火车站这个事件而脑洞大开,展开想象。”而有些直接以生活为原型的故事创作的漫画,每每回看,就一定是会心一笑的。“幸好画下来,算是某种程度上的记忆储存了吧。”她说。

Fang’s recent manga series I Don’t Want You to Know is full of young women’s experiences of yearning and unspoken love. “This one is different from my previous books, which were sort of bland,” she says when asked about her intentions. “It’s more a book for helping readers think about love’s different forms.”

As she candidly admits, she’s gone through a lot in the past three years. “I reached the biggest crossroads I’ve ever encountered on my journey,” she says. Her previous works, such as Apartment for Three, had sweet, feel-good subject matter. “Back then my life was very innocent, or very simplistic, and every day I was showered in love. That book doesn’t have an edge. It’s bland—it can’t be considered my best work,” she says.


小孬最近新出版的漫画系列叫《才不要让你知道》,充满着女生关于心动、暗恋和爱情的种种小情绪。问及这本书的创作初衷,小孬说:这是一本区别于前面温吞的作品,更多是去帮助读者思考爱的形式的作品。

过去的三年里,她坦言经历了很多事情,“在人生道路上来了个前所未有的大劈叉。”之前的作品,比如《三味合租屋》,是很温柔很温馨的题材。“那时的自己生活也是很单纯,或者说很单一,每天都被满满的爱包裹着。作品没有锋芒,很温吞。所以不能称得上是‘代表作’。”她说。

“Then two years ago, I went through some emotional distress. As a form of therapy, and to console myself, I drew some comics and published them in a magazine geared toward girls,” Fang says. Out of the blue, she received messages from women saying that her comics helped them finally get over their heartbreak. “I was really moved, and I thought, if my comics can offer love and hope to more women, then my work will have meaning.”

And that’s how I Don’t Want You to Know was born.


“直到前年,我经历了感情上的挫折。那段时间为了自愈,画了一些鼓励自己的漫画作品发表在面向青少年女生的杂志上。”没想到的是,小孬竟然收到了一些女孩子的私信,表示这些漫画治愈了在失恋中踌躇不前的她们。“我很受感动。想到如果自己的漫画能带给更多女孩子爱与希望,那我的创作就是有意义的。”

所以《才不要让你知道》诞生了。

Now that she’s completed this book, she can look back on her previous self and appreciate that, even though she never planned on exploring these topics, she’s grown in the process.  “I hope that this book can give girls a sense of how beautiful love is, as well as how fickle. If they’re aware of the fickleness, they can protect themselves while giving themselves over to love,” she says.

Now Fang knows what direction she wants to take her art in: serious manga for women. Far from the popular “harem” genre, with its clichéd stories of women vying with one another for a man’s attention, Fang wants to create thoughtful works that address contemporary gender relations and explore how women can find emotional fulfillment in a male-dominated society.

等创作告一段落,再回过头看看之前一段时间的自己,方小孬觉得虽然姿态很被动,但换个角度来看,亦是一种成长。“我希望能通过这本书,让女孩子们体会到爱情的美好以及无常,在知道无常的前提下,保护好自己,再去投入爱情。”

现在的小孬,已然明确了想创作的方向:比较严肃的成年女性漫画。区别于内地网路上的“后宫漫画”,小孬更想认真地去讨论现在生活中的两性关系,以及女性处在这个男权社会体系下,怎样去成全自己的情感。

Liu Ziqian’s simple, elegant, slightly surreal photographs are no ordinary self-portraits. They show more of her long limbs than of her face, and they often center on fruits, mirrors, or flowers. Yet she remains the subject, not only in a physical but in an emotional sense: her photographs began as a way to explore herself and cope with loneliness in the wake of a breakup. 

Out of all the creative outlets that she could have pursued, Liu decided on photography because she found that it was the most therapeutic. Soul-searching came in the click of a shutter. Photography also served as a visual diary, where different moments of her appearance are recorded in pictures.

“What I love most about photography is that it can be a very quiet and profound companion for me,” she says. “It helps me not just to record different moments, but also to convey my inner voice. In the process of photography, I can find answers to many internal questions.” 


刘子千镜头下简约、优雅、略显超现实的照片,其实并非一般的肖像照——它们更多的是展示她修长的四肢,而不是脸,也常常以水果、镜子或花朵为中心。然而,她自己仍是主题——不仅是身体,在情感上,她的照片也开启了一种方法,去探索自己、去应付分手后的孤独。

Liu’s series of portraits may be serene, but they are far from dull. “I hope to give the audience a small world that’s calm but not flat,” she says about her works. Though each portrait has a demure and delicate quality, she still aims to subtly channel women’s inner strength. At times Liu finds herself plagued by restlessness and bouts of insecurity. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, though, she takes control of these feelings, composing photographs whose meticulous balance seems to convey an emotional state.


刘子千一系列的肖像照也许显得很淡然,但她们并不单调。“我希望给观众一个平静但不平淡的小世界。”她这样评价自己的作品。尽管每张照片都流露出端庄细腻之感,但她仍然试图巧妙地引导女性内在的力量。刘子千时不时会发现自己为焦躁和不安感所困扰,她不再顾影自怜,而是去控制这些情感,通过拍摄照片,以微妙的平衡去传达了一种情感状态。

Forget about avant-garde theatrics and elaborate props—Liu uses simple, everyday objects. Round mirrors, fruits and flowers, even eggs serve as her co-stars in the portraits. They help shape the two main themes of her works. First, a balance between human beings and nature. Liu believes that humans are part of the natural world, as we live in the same space and breathe the same air. “I try to find a state of harmony between humans and nature in my works, one that is full of peace and emotion.” 

The second theme centers on perspective. As we get overly familiar with the simple objects we use everyday, we no longer really see them in a unique light. Liu encourages the viewer to look at familiar things from different angles by changing the appearance of her props, such as using sliced lemons instead of the whole fruit. “This is not only about things,” she clarifies, pointing to a larger meaning. “It’s also about understanding others and our hearts.” 


忘掉那些浮夸的动作和复杂的道具吧,刘子千的照片里用的是再普通不过的日用品——圆镜、水果和鲜花,甚至鸡蛋也可以入镜。它们帮助塑造了她作品的两大主题。第一,是人与自然的平衡。刘子千认为人是自然界的一部分,因为我们生活在同一个空间里,呼吸着同样的空气。“我试图在我的作品中找到一种人与自然和谐的状态,一种充满和平与情感的状态。”

Minimalism is one of the most popular styles of photography on Instagram, perhaps because viewers seek peace in an otherwise chaotic world. Almost without meaning to, Liu has beautifully harnessed this aesthetic in her photos. “I do not have a very clear expectation of style. Everything is completely based on feelings and is always in the state of semi-fumbling, semi-learning. But I want to keep it minimalist. Minimalism is a reminder for me to stay pure inside and try not to be too distracted by the noise.” 

She discovered her style through constant arrangement and experimentation while shooting and processing her photos. She aims to find the combination that makes her feel most comfortable and “quiet.” Avoiding repetition, or trying to maintain her style while still pushing boundaries, sometimes proves to be a challenge, but she presses on. “I want to think more and observe more to get more inspiration,” she says. 


也许是因为观众想在这个混乱的世界里寻求安宁,让极简主义变成 Instagram 上最流行的摄影风格之一。刘子千在她的照片中完美地利用了这种美学:几乎全无刻意。“我对风格没有很明确的期望。一切都完全建立在感情的基础上,总是处于半摸索、半学习的状态。但我想保持它极简主义。极简主义提醒我要保持内心的澄澈,不要被噪音干扰。”

Speaking of inspiration, Liu finds her muse in her own growth. “Sometimes I look at my earlier pictures on Instagram. The pictures were obviously not mature, but I can see my growth process over time. So I wonder how far I’ll go in photography, and whether this curiosity about the unknown and the visible will inspire me to become a photographer.”

Liu’s success is also a testimonial to the power of social media. Despite taking photos for only two years, and having held only two public exhibitions, she reaches an international audience, with close to 100,000 followers. 

“I had never really thought about this before, but I really appreciate the viewers liking my work. All I can do now is try to respond to all the people who have left comments and move on to shoot more works. I have no future plans at the moment—I’ll let things take their course.” 


说到灵感,刘子千发现这来自于她自己的成长。“有时我在 Instagram 上看我以前的照片,那时拍得显然还不成熟,但日积月累,我可以看到我的成长过程。所以我想知道我在摄影方面能走多远,这种对未知和可见事物的好奇心是否会激励我成为一名摄影师。”

Drawing Out the Hurt 魑魅魍魉的小清新

“When people talk about my illustrations, they often say they’re frightening or gruesome,” says Piru, a Korean illustrator in Seoul. “Maybe that’s because the characters have blank expressions, and parts of the bodies are drawn as bones.”

A ribcage over a multicolored heart, a torso half-hidden in ghostly trees: despite her gruesome subjects, she uses a soft palette, often creating a strong visual dissonance.


当人们谈论我的插画,会说它们是可怕的、令人毛骨悚然的。这么说的理由可能是画中的人物都没有表情,而且部分躯体被画成了骨头。来自韩国首尔的插画师 PIRU,这样说起人们对她插画的评价。

Piru has been drawing since she was a child, but she didn’t formally launch her career as an illustrator until 2016. In the past she disliked expressing negative feelings, but in illustration she eventually found an outlet for her emotions. “I used to think showing my negative side was shameful,” she says. “But now I’ve learned that if your negative feelings don’t get an external release, things usually get much worse.”

The characters in her illustrations seem to wear deadened expressions, as though they’ve experienced some unimaginable grief. But Piru says they’re overcoming sorrow in their own way. She depicts their process of silently bearing pain and waiting for it to pass. “In life, people feel different feelings differently,” she explains. Her pictures show her fragile, struggling inner world, but they also provide a refuge, a place for healing. “I look forward to finding calm, with the passage of time, even though I also know that new sorrows might arrive. If you let time settle things and patiently endure, the clouds will part once more.”


虽然从小喜欢画画,但 PIRU 正式开始插画生涯是 2016 年。以前不喜欢暴露负面情绪的她,在工作后慢慢找到了通过插画来宣泄感情的方法,“以前我觉得展现负能量的一面很羞耻,但之后我发现如果内心的负面情绪没有向外得到释放,事情往往会变得更糟。
