Rongbaozhai Coffee Bookstore

Housed in a small two-story building off Beijing’s well-known Liulichang Street is Rongbaozhai Coffee Bookstore. Built by the government in the 1980s, the building was constructed in a pseudo-classical style. The original space was a bookstore that specialized in selling Chinese paintings and antiquarian prints. The redesign maintains the building’s previous identity as a bookstore, but employs a sleek modern aesthetic that eliminates the rigid and stuffy atmosphere many people associate with traditional bookstores.


荣宝斋咖啡书屋,位于京城知名的琉璃厂古文化街街口。这个由政府在上世纪80年代兴建的仿古建筑,原本是一家经营中国书画与古籍的书店。今次的再设计,既保留了建筑原本作为书店的存在,同时也应用现代设计的美学理念,一改传统书店给人的粗重、刻板印象。

Building off the original structural grid, the ring-like interior has an island-style space in the middle of the room. On the first floor, the central island is a cashier’s desk and a barista’s workstation with iron shelving wrapping around the exterior. On the second floor, the centerpiece of the room is a meeting space constructed with switchable glass that has the ability to change in transparency, allowing for privacy when necessary.


基于建筑原有的柱网,室内呈现出环状的空间结构:中央区域为岛式空间,周边为铁制书架墙体。首层中心岛作为收银台及咖啡操作台;二层由调光玻璃围合成一个发光的盒子作为会议室,调光玻璃可改变内外的透明状态,在有需要的时候提供私密空间,让会议室使用更加灵活。

The 300 square meter space is also strategically populated with plants, which are used to imbue a sense of vitality into the space. Housed in boxes integrated into the shelves, ferns are the main types of plants used throughout the store. Herbs like mint and apple pelargoniums can be found on the coffee tables and in front of windows, lending their refreshing fragrance to the space.


这个总面积约300平米的空间到处安置了绿色植物,使得整体充满生机活力。室内植物主要选择蕨类植物,放入盆栽里并嵌入于各处的书架中,与周围融为一体。而香草类的薄荷,碰碰香等小型植物则放置在窗前及咖啡桌上,散发沁人心脾的芬芳。

The designer behind the store’s transformation is Wen Qiang Han, founder of ARCHSTUDIO, who took into consideration of the fact that traditional bookstores are no longer able to attract readers. By implementing a café into the minimalist-style redesign, he hoped to attract a different crowd and bring in more foot traffic. With the redesign, Qiang Han envisioned a place where people could stop by and comfortably relax with a book and a fragrant cup of coffee for an afternoon, a sanctuary away from the fast-paced frenzy of our digitized society.


此次改造的主设计师韩文强,为建筑营设计工作室的创始人,他考虑到在如今的信息时代,以往书店的单一模式已经无法吸引读者。在对传统书店进行改造升级的时,他引入咖啡厅元素,结合极简的设计风格,以吸引更多元化的读者群体和客流量。韩文强旨在打造一方舒适的书香之地,希望来到这里的人们可停下脚步,以暂时远离奔波的现代生活,伴随着一杯浓香的咖啡,享受一个美好的午后。

The Barn & The Bunker

FLASKGroup and GREEN & SAFE have joined forces and unveiled a new food and beverage project in Shanghai’s Xintiandi. The concept for this collaboration came about when GREEN & SAFE took notice of FLASKGroup’s previous cocktail project, Botanist, which introduced the idea of “farm-to-bar” to Shanghai, a twist on the “farm-to-table” concept that GREEN & SAFE is rather well-known for. The new space that houses both brands is split into two distinctively different areas. The first area is The Barn, which is operated by GREEN & SAFE and offers a rich selection of delicious organic food. Hidden within The Barn is The Bunker, a military-themed speakeasy bar operated by FLASKGroup.


FLASKGroup和GREEN & SAFE携手打造了全新餐饮概念店,于上海新天地正式亮相。FLASKGroup旗下的鸡尾酒酒吧Botanist,是在上海首次将“农场到酒吧”的创意店,一向秉持“从农场到餐桌”发展理念的GREEN & SAFE留意到这个项目,双方一拍即合,决定携手合作。两品牌联手的新店,在空间上一分为二:The Barn和隐藏于其间的The Bunker,前者由GREEN & SAFE经营,提供琳琅满目的有机美食,后者由FLASKGroup管理,是以战时防空洞穴为灵感而设计的地下酒吧。

The Barn and The Bunker dramatically contrasts each other in terms of aesthetics and ambience. The Barn is a large open space, warm and inviting, illuminated with a combination of natural light and amber artificial lighting. The Bunker, on the other hand, has a darker feel and can only be reached through a hidden entrance from the dining area. Like many bars, The Bunker opts for dimly lit, atmospheric lighting. Many tools and items (like ammunition crates) are used to decorate the space, which adds to the feeling of being in an actual bunker. Paying homage to FLASK, their first speakeasy bar, this new space uses infusion bottles and actual flasks as part of the decor.


The Barn和The Bunker在美学设计和氛围打造上形成鲜明对比。The Barn空间开阔,自然光和琥珀色灯光融合为一种温暖色调,非常吸引人。The Bunker就完全走另一个路线,其入口隐秘于就餐区某处。这里一如多数酒吧,灯光昏暗,气氛暧昧。其内部诸多装饰的工具和摆件,如弹药箱等,都让酒吧里的人仿若置身于真实碉堡内。为了致敬他们旗下的第一家地下酒吧FLASK,他们还使用了输液瓶和真正的酒壶作为装饰品。

The Barn is a gigantic industrial-style space with an open kitchen and a second floor. Much like the other GREEN & SAFE locations, there’s a marketplace offering fresh organic produce and a deli counter. Directly above the dining area, large cuts of aged Iberico ham dangle overhead from the raised ceiling. These hams would almost appear to act as part of the decor, but they’re actually available to order from the menu. One of the new and most interesting offerings of this new space are their cones, which comes in four different flavors. One of the cones is made with wild mushrooms, truffles, and cheese; another uses caviar, smoked salmon, and onions; the third variety uses the aforementioned Iberico ham, which is paired up with quail egg and chili; and lastly, there’s a cone made with wild prawn, egg salad, and seaweed. More filling and heartier dishes like grilled Boston lobster and different cuts of M6 Wagyu beef can also be found on the menu. And of course, many classic dishes from the other GREEN & SAFE locations are also available here.

Combining the seasonal cocktails found at Botanist, along with the prohibition style drinks and classic cocktails from FLASK, and a selection of all new drinks inspired by GREEN & SAFE, The Bunker is described by FLASKGroup as an amalgamation of their best drinks from the last few years. In the “Seasonal” section, the cocktails were made by using the all-organic fruits from GREEN & SAFE’s own farm. The cocktails in this section tastes lighter and feels more refreshing, a flavor profile that perfectly complements many of GREEN & SAFE’s salads and finger foods. With their “FLASK signatures”, a selection of prohibition-style cocktails made with a local twist like the Far East Manhattan made with homemade longan jujube juice, their aim is to transport patrons back into the original FLASK off of Shanxi South Road from the initial sip. The “G&S Inspired” section is completely dedicated to this collaboration with GREEN & SAFE, with cocktails designed around some of GREEN & SAFE’s top-selling dishes. A few of the most noteworthy drinks from this section are: Carrot Cake Conquest, a drink that was created with GREEN & SAFE’s carrot cake in mind; Sourforce, a mouth-puckering drink that uses White Wine Balsama vinegar and Casanova Balsamico vinegar; and Licorice Tea Break, a cocktail made with Egyptian licorice tea syrup, plums, and pear juice. Of course, there are also mocktails made with the same fresh ingredients.

When creatives come together and collaborate, the result is often unexpected and impressive. This is no exception when it comes to the food and beverage industry. The Light Collector

Shot by Mumbai-based filmmaker Dheerankur Upasak, The Light Collector tells the story of Dilish Parekh, a camera collector from India. In 2003, Parekh officially entered the Guinness Book of Worlds Records for having the largest collection of cameras in the world with an astounding 2,634 cameras. Nowadays, his camera collection has grown to approximately 4,500 cameras, and includes many rare and expensive models like the Leica 250 that’s valued at over $80,000 (USD).

Parekh’s story began in 1970, when his grandfather gifted him with cameras. At the time, many of those gifts were cheap models that cost less than $15 (USD) each. This resulted in Parekh’s lifelong obsession with cameras, and as he grew older, his collection of cameras grew with him. Whenever Parekh traveled through India, he would visit the local markets and add new cameras to his collection. His impressive collection has interested camera aficionados from all over the world, but Parekh has turned down all of their offers, saying, “These cameras are my life, I’m not going to sell them as long as I am alive.”

LK+RIGI Design Office

Over the course of eight years, RIGI Design has developed into an impressive multifaceted design company. Founded by Kai Liu, the company now employs a roster of talented young designers that all contribute to the spectacular work RIGI is so well known for. Their aesthetic is unique and undeniably well polished. With a focus on warmth, simplicity, and the human element, their designs revolve around making real connections with people. Kai Liu had a vision of creating a space that both suitably matched and properly conveyed the temperament of RIGI. Their new office in Shanghai’s Changning district is the project that resulted from that vision. The aesthetics and design concepts they employed for this new office are similar to their other projects, which skillfully invoke emotions through an air of simplicity.


在经过了八年的发展,RIGI睿集设计已成长为一个多元化的综合设计团队。这个由设计师刘恺一手创立的公司,聚集了一帮才华横溢的年轻设计师,为工作室推出的诸多品牌设计注入新鲜想法与创意。RIGI睿集设计的设计美学独树一帜,无论从哪个角度,都呈现一种美感。简约、温暖的设计风格中融入了人文情怀,让公司的设计品与使用者实现联通。在进行空间设计创作时,刘恺都以切合RIGI睿集的品牌为理念,恰如其分地传递公司的设计价值。他们位于上海长宁区的新办公室就是以此为理念进行设计。新办公室的美学价值和设计理念在他们很多其他的项目中都可看到影子,并重点在于通过简洁设计触发人文情感。

The office space began in a rather plain rectangular space, with natural light only available from one side of the building. After careful consideration, the space was divided into a few different areas: an open office, an independent office, a lab space, a meeting room, a material room, a small showroom, and a reception area. Different design approaches imbued each different area with its own identity and unique characteristics. The meeting room was originally an abysmally tight room with only a height of four meters, a cramped space that’s not ideal for meetings. Eliminating the stereotypical meeting room designs, they created a pitched roof with chamfered edges and a light that radiated from the nooks of the wall. These design choices work in tandem to alleviate the unwanted sense of the room being too narrow.


新办公室原有空间相当方正,所在楼宇为单面采光。经过反复思量后,整个空间分为了几个不同的区域:开放办公区、独立办公区、产品实验室、会议室、材料室、展示厅,以及接待处。每个区域都融入了符合其功能定位和独特气质的不同设计元素。会议室所在之处,原为层高仅有4米、狭长至极的空间,作为会议空间不甚理想。为了消除会议室给人的固有印象,设计师将会议室顶部设计为圆角斜顶造型,同时将光源设置在墙面凹槽内以营造放射性灯光效果。这些设计细节均意在都是为了减少原来空间的局促感,营造轻松的氛围。

Another one of their more unique areas is LKLAB, their designated lab space. This area is set aside for Kai Liu and other designers to gather and build models or put some of their favorite objects on display. This space was born out of Kai Liu’s belief that designers shouldn’t be overdependent on computers, but rather create with their hand and eyes in order to create good sketches and models. Kai Liu also believes that a sense of dimension is important for interior designers, so in order to hone and develop the designers’ sense of dimension, many of the furniture and walls in the new offices are marked with their respective dimensions.


另一个更能体现他们的设计风格的是LKLAB, 也就是LK实验室。这里是刘恺及设计师们在一起制作模型、陈列心爱之物的场所。之所以要建造这样一个实验室,是因为刘恺坚信设计师不能过多依赖电脑的信念,而应该依靠眼手并用去创造出好的草图和模型。此外,刘恺还认为作为室内设计师,对空间的感知很重要。为了培养设计师们精准的空间感知,新办公室里很多墙面和家具上都被标注上了尺寸。

RIGI’s color choices were thoughtful and played a big part in forming their ideal ambience. Their colors sought to establish a calming mood that wouldn’t feel too harsh or intrusive. To achieve this, they opted for contrasting, desaturated colors. But even with all the work and thoughtfulness poured into the design of their new office, they’ve never once deviated from their original mindset, which is the belief that more important than the space itself is the staff that will be working within the space and all the future stories and designs that will come with the people.


在用色方面,RIGI也相当用心,并通过色彩营造出他们的理想空间氛围。他们的用色意在营造一种令人平心静气的气氛,力图避免太过强烈或者太过于具有干扰性。因此他们选择了低饱和度的对比色彩组合。当然,新办公室的所有设计理念和心思全部都构建于RIGI的设计初衷:人永远是设计的灵魂,做和人有关系的、有趣的、有故事的设计。

“Safe” by Dumbfoundead

Korean American rapper Jonathan Park, better known as Dumbfoundead, is a seasoned veteran in the Los Angeles rap circuit. Growing up in the thriving hip-hop scene of L.A., he was exposed to hip-hop culture at a young age. As he grew older, he only found himself gravitating towards the music and lifestyle more and more. The internet played a large part in his rise as a rapper. He built up a strong web presence through his participation on Grind Time Now, a West Coast rap battle league, where he showcased his quick wit and clever lyricism by going up against many other prominent battle rappers of the time. DFD ended up raking up over two million views on many of his battle rap videos on YouTube, cementing his status as a legend in the battle rap scene. His self-titled debut album DFD was released in 2011, which he followed up with two more solo albums in 2012 and 2013. Just last year, DFD returned to the battle rap scene after a five-year hiatus by battling it out at King of the Dot, a Toronto-based rap battle league supported by Drake’s label OVO. He also featured on the remix of Korean trap rapper Keith Ape’s international hit “It G Ma”.

At the Academy Awards this year, Chris Rock presented a monologue about the Oscars being “overly white”, but DFD felt like Asians, Latinos, and other different ethnicities were excluded from the conversation. He channeled his frustration into “Safe”, a music video where he voices his discontent with the underrepresentation of Asian Americans in modern day Hollywood and calls attention to the pervasive whitewashing of Hollywood roles. The title of the song itself is a reference to how Asian Americans are often considered “safe” to push around, being stereotypically viewed as timid and reserved. In the music video, DFD humorously emphasizes his message by superimposing his face over the faces of white actors from iconic movies and TV sitcoms. The video even concludes with DFD getting replaced by a white actor off of his own music video. DFD’s first ever China tour is happening later this month, with shows scheduled for Xi’an, Guangzhou, and Shanghai.

Life Elsewhere is a brand new collaborative album from The Shanghai Restoration Project, featuring electronic music producer Dave Liang, jazz vocalist Zhang Le, and multimedia artist Sun Yunfan. After having met one another in New York’s artistic community, the three began working together on various creative projects, which turned into more regular and frequent collaborations. Foreshadowing this full-length album, the trio released Mungbean Mash, a short two-track EP in 2015. With this brand new LP, the three talented artists take listeners on a 12-track voyage through a meticulously crafted, genre-defying soundscape that celebrates the embracing of life’s uncertainties.

Over the years, the three have established a sense of rapport with one another through their frequent collaborations. Yunfan and Dave have partnered on multimedia performance projects that have been showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Midi Electronic Festival. One of the duo’s performances will also be showcased at the upcoming Amsterdam Dance Event. Zhang Le and Dave have collaborated on their own projects in the past as well; in 2014, they released The Classics, an aptly named full-length album that featured a collection of Shanghai jazz cover songs from the 1930s and 1940s.

On The Classics, Zhang Le’s vocals were considered to be the main instrument and Dave considered his electronic sounds as merely supporting characters. However, for the production of Life Elsewhere, Dave worked with Yunfan who pushed for a storyteller’s approach: identifying what story a song was trying to tell and then figuring out how best to tell it. As a result, the album incorporates more natural sound samples (teacups, crickets, the San Francisco wave organ, empty cans rolling through an alley) and live instrumentation (clarinet, indian mouth harp, trumpet) than previous SRP albums. The new album also doesn’t focus on Zhang Le’s vocals alone. Instead, her vocals and all the various instruments weave in and out harmoniously, painting a strong compelling narrative about their modern reinterpretation of farewells and about seeking out new experiences. “Historically, diaspora has a melancholy attributed with it. It is not healthy and is a dated way of looking at things. The concept and nostalgia is attributed to an old world,” Dave describes. “Nowadays, in this internet age where everything is interconnected, more and more people have the opportunity to travel to new places. As a result, people embrace uncertainty. It’s part of our life, and that’s something we wanted to explore.”

The melodies for Life Elsewhere were conceptualized by Dave, Zhang Le and Yunfan. But what ended up shaping the direction and overall tone of the album were Yunfan’s lyrics. “I feel like the lyrics are about telling people to not become complacent in life, but instead to go seek and explore unfamiliar territories,” says Zhang Le. Besides the lyrics, Yunfan also created the visuals for the entire album. and designed the CD packaging. She also shot the music video for “Joke” at a dam in New York, and produced all the digital animations and hand-drawn illustrations used in the live shows.

Life Elsewhere is a feel-good album that shatters the negative connotations associated with good-byes. Not only that, the album also advocates for people to stay hungry, urging people to never be content. For example, “Illusion of Me” is a heartfelt track about untethering from a previous version of yourself in order to become a better person. “Restless Feet”, as the name might suggest, is about traveling to unfamiliar places and being comfortable with the new experiences. The final song and the only cover on the entire album is “Song Bie”, a track that Dave feels like encapsulates the essence of the album. “Song Bie” is traditional Chinese farewell song, usually presented with a sense of heartache. But on Life Elsewhere, it’s transformed into a swing-style celebratory track with Zhang Le’s cheerful scat singing peppered throughout the song. “Song Bie” is actually dedicated to Zhang Le, wishing her well in her move to Europe, Dave explained with a smile. “We’ve known each other for five years and have travelled together. We’ve toured Russia, Indonesia, China. For us, it’s a celebratory send off. When we meet again, we’ll have that much more richness. It’ll contribute to future projects that we’ll want to do together.”

SAVOR Taipei

Street food culture and Taiwan are practically inseparable from one another. What the island is probably most well-known for are the lively night markets, populated with countless stalls offering a smorgasbord of cheap and tasty local delicacies. But unfortunately, even with food being such a central part of Taiwanese culture, the region is rarely associated with fine dining. Meet Nicolas Chang, the head chef and the founder of SAVOR, a passionate individual who feels like Taiwan’s terroir is an overlooked and untapped resource, a land offering a rich selection of rare produce and unique flavors. So after studying culinary arts abroad and being mentored by world-renowned chefs in Paris, he was set on returning to Taipei and opening a restaurant of his own.


一提到台灣,似乎總也繞不開那熱鬧夜市中,滿目琳瑯的街頭餐飲文化,不過可惜的是,很少有人想起這裡的精緻餐飲。SAVOR店的老闆兼主廚Nicolas Chang卻認為台灣本土的餐飲文化遭到了忽視,豐富的料理製作和風味都未被開發,待人探索。經海外學藝、師承巴黎知名主廚的Nicolas返回台灣,打造屬於自己的餐廳品牌。

His debut restaurant À Table, a private dining space, officially opened in 2011. “À Table was small, and the kitchen was probably only around ten square meters,” Nicolas describes. “Customers actually had to pass through the kitchen in order to get to the restroom. But I viewed the space restriction differently – I saw it as an intimate setting where I could share my passion for food with all my guests.” But after running À Table for two years, and as his customer base steadily grew, he felt an obligation to provide a more complete dining experience. “I felt like I had a responsibility to give them something even better, to give them a more well-rounded dining experience. SAVOR was born out of that sense of responsibility,” Nicolas says.

Nicolas’ story actually begins in the Pampas of South America and Argentina. Growing up in this region, the produce he ate often came straight from the field; his appreciation for locally sourced and organically grown ingredients can be traced back to this period of time “Now with SAVOR, we actually work with an aboriginal lady in Hualien. She’s working tirelessly to restore some of the edible wild plants native to Taiwan. Every year, we’ll visit her garden with our team and see what kind of treasures we can dig up,” says Nicolas. These types of wild plants are rarely seen in any Taipei restaurants, let alone in high-end gastronomy. But the obscure nature of these plants is undoubtedly part of the appeal for both Nicolas and his guests, who share a mutual interest in being taken out of their culinary comfort zones.

Citing his grandmother as an influence, Nicolas vividly recalls memories of her cooking. “She was a fantastic cook. Her cooking style was a mix of traditional Japanese and Taiwanese. When I taste her food, I can always feel the love and sincerity that she puts into it,” he says. “One of our amuse-bouches from the previous menu was a dish made with tomatoes and plums, which was then encapsulated in a tomato-flavored water sphere. The flavors of this dish were closely tied to my childhood, and through it, my intention was to share those memories with my guests.” Some of his other favorites include: a scallop dish, drizzled with a flavorful reduced sauce made with fifteen different vegetables; a tuna tartare dish, served with Taiwanese anchovy on a dried citrus peel; and a puffed purple rice dish, inspired by Hualien cuisine and made with magao, a rare type of spice used by aboriginal natives in Eastern Taiwan that tastes like a blend of black pepper, lemon, and ginger.


深受奶奶料理影響的Nicolas回憶起她的烹飪,仍舊記憶猶新:“我奶奶她是一個了不起的廚師,混合了傳統日式和台式的烹飪風格。每當我吃到她菜,總是能讓我感到她滲入其中的愛和誠意。我們之前的菜單上有一道用番茄和李子為原料而製作的餐前小點心,就是來自那個時候裝在水壺裡呈番茄味道的飲料。這道點心的味道總讓我想起自己的童年,我也希望通過它與我的客人們分享我童年的記憶。”他最愛的菜餚還有:扇貝搭配由15種不同蔬菜濃縮而成的可口蘸醬,韃靼吞拿魚綴以陳皮台灣鳀魚,花蓮特色鬆軟紫米飯,混以台灣東部原住民的一種叫做馬告的罕見香料,味道似黑胡椒、檸檬和生薑混合而成。

During my brief visit, the SAVOR kitchen was brimming with movement; the kitchen staff moved quickly and purposefully, chopping away and dilligently preparing for the upcoming dinner service. Nicolas moved around the kitchen in equal haste, ensuring the efficiency and quality of the entire preparation process. After prep was over, he decided to work on refining an upcoming dessert with the free time. Employing a classic molecular gastronomy technique, Nicolas plucks a large container of liquid carbon dioxide from the back of his kitchen and began to douse a pre-blended mixture with the contents. Intermittently, Nicolas would spoon a homemade hibiscus-based syrup in between applications of the carbon dioxide. The metallic countertop quickly overflows with white vapor as the blend flash-freezes into a solid. Wasting no time, Nicolas picks up a pestle and begins pummeling the frozen solid into shards of rose-colored marshmallows. “It’s done like this on purpose. I’m aiming to create organic shape similar to rocks,” Nicolas said. “I like to play with intuition, which is always fun. Unfortunately, we’re still in the process of constructing this dessert and it’s not quite ready yet.”

Despite being formally trained in France, it’s impressive to see the ways Nicolas’ dishes pay homage to Taiwan. Even more impressive is seeing how every dish that comes out of the SAVOR kitchen is a creatively constructed piece of gastronomic art. He tells me, “We do what we do not because we want to stand out from others. We want to stand up for those who have contributed so much in terms of agriculture and culture. Our predecessors have paved the way for us, and now it is our time to make things even better.”

“Flight Attendant” by XXX

XXX is a Seoul-based duo, consisting of music producer FRNK and rapper Kim Ximya. The highly anticipated debut album KYOMI was released just last month from their very own independent music label Beasts and Natives. The album was released in conjunction with the music video for “Flight Attendant”, a track that features a haunting, unconventional instrumental crafted by FRNK that’s only complemented by Kim Ximya’s acerbic verses.

For the “Flight Attendant” music video, Parisian artist Mattis Dovier unveils a demented, psychotic vision of an airplane trip gone awry. Told in his signature 8-bit-dot style, the black-and-white animation features a male protagonist whose perception of reality has seemingly shattered. Many harrowing happenings occur throughout the video: a woman is devoured by one of the cabin’s economy-sized seats, suffocating as her head is forcibly sucked into the headrest; a smiling flight attendant is gruesomely sliced in half, revealing her inner anatomy as she literally falls apart; and another scene shows an ebony serpent violently emerging from a woman’s eye socket, popping out an eye and winding through the orifices of her face. ONEQ’s Evocative Illustrations

ONEQ is a Japanese illustrator who’s most well known for her illustrations of vintage pin-up girls. Her drawings seamlessly blend Western and Eastern styles – think 1900s American poster art, with the curvy sexualized female form, mixed together with the flawless skin and delicate features of the females portrayed in Japanese manga. ONEQ says she’s endlessly fascinated with women and the female body. This fascination is mirrored in all of her work, where she draws captivating images of voluptuous hourglass-shaped women, powerful and seductive. Her illustrations are proud celebrations of femininity and sexuality.

ONEQ was born, raised, and is currently based in Kumamoto, the capital of Kyushu island. As a completely self-taught artist, ONEQ’s love affair with illustration, like most illustrators, can be traced back to her childhood. Manga books were a big part of that childhood. Generally, Japanese manga is separated into different categories, some cater to a female audience and others cater to a male audience. Having an older brother allowed her the opportunity to be exposed to both worlds.


ONEQは、九州の熊本で生まれ育ちました。完全に独学のアーティストであるONEQと絵との親密な関係は、多くのイラストレーター同様、彼女自身の幼少期に遡ります。日本人である彼女にとって漫画文化は子供時代の大きな割合を占めるものでした。日本の漫画は、女性向けと男性向けという2種類に大きく分類する事ができるでしょう。年の近い兄がいる彼女は、その両方の持つ世界感に浸るチャンスに恵まれたわけです。

She cites three major influences that pushed her along the path to becoming an illustrator. The first is the famous manga artist Rumiko Takahashi, the illustrator behind Ranma 1/2 and InuYasha, who she says is her biggest influence. The second is Rockin’ Jelly Bean, a famous Japanese pop artist, whose use of colors captivated her and changed the way she looked at how colors could be used. The third is Simon Bisley, a British comic artist that portrays women in equal parts femininity and equal parts strength. All of these influences came together and evolved her artwork into what it is today.


彼女は、自身を振り返りイラストレーターの道へと歩ませた影響力の高い3人の作家を過去に挙げています。1人目は、『らんま1/2』や『うる星やつら』の作者として著名な日本の漫画家、高橋留美子で、ONEQにとって子供時代に強力な影響を初めに受けたとのこと。2人目は、鮮やかな色使いや完成度の高さが彼女を魅了し、色彩への見方を変えるきっかけとなった有名なポップアーティスト、ロッキン・ジェリー・ビーン。そして3人目は、女性の女らしさと力強さを濃厚に描きあげるイギリスのコミックアーティスト、サイモン・ビズリー。これらの素晴らしい影響力すべてが一体となり、今日見られる彼女の作品に昇華したわけです。

Having just turned thirty-four earlier this year, ONEQ is working full time as a freelance artist, but just recently reallocated one day out of every week to work at her friend’s bar. Her motivations behind this aren’t financial. The bar is stimulating and the atmosphere inspires her art, she says. “Many unique and powerful ladies go there on weekends. Their energy is captivating.” Not a stranger to this lifestyle, she recalls being mixed up in Japan’s night life scene as a teenager. Often missing school, ONEQ would find herself spending time in the more dubious parts of town. Even though she prefers the slow-paced and quiet life in Kumamoto, she considers Japan’s night life to be another aspect of Japanese culture that has influenced her artwork and style. She says, “In that regard, I consider my past to be both good and bad.”


ここ最近の彼女は、フリーランスアーティストとして制作に専念するかたわら、週に一度だけ友人のとあるバーへ手伝いに出かけるそうです。この不思議なライフスタイルのきっかけとなったのは経済的なものからではなく、その空間には彼女の制作を刺激し手助けする雰囲気やパワーがあるのだと言います。「週末になると、ユニークでミステリアスな女性が多く遊びに来ます。そのエネルギーや感触が制作の刺激になっている。」と彼女は語ります。そんなライフスタイルに無縁ではない彼女は、夜の繁華街で遊んでいたティーンエイジャーの頃を回想します。彼女はたびたび学校を休み、夜の妖しい繁華街で友人達と日常を過ごしたものです。熊本の静かでのんびりとした生活を好むとはいえ、夜の怪しげなネオン達が自身の作品にも少なからず影響を与える日本文化の側面でもあると考えています。「自分の過去は良い面と悪い面、両方の要素で成り立っていると思っています。」と述べています。

ONEQ’s creation process is a mix of both traditional and modern techniques. She first begins with rough sketches to flesh out the initial concept. Once the idea has been clearly thought out, she will then draw a refined version in monochrome by using mechanical pencils. If the image is intended to be a colored piece of work, it gets scanned and digitally colored in Photoshop. Her pieces that involve color could take upwards of two weeks to fully complete.


彼女の制作プロセスは、伝統と現代の技術をカジュアルに組み合わせたものです。まずラフスケッチから始め、最初のコンセプトを肉付けしていきます。アイデアやイメージが明確に浮かんだ段階で、今度はシャープペンシルを使ってモノクロで精密な線画を描いていきます。作品が彩色画となる場合は、Photoshopでデジタルに彩色を施します。色彩を用いた場合の彼女の作品は、最終的に完成までに2週間を超えることもあります。

Besides only working on paper and computer screens, she has also completed numerous murals and is keen on creating even more in the near future. She says, “I want to create more murals. It would be great if I could create murals in different places all over the world. Shanghai is definitely on my list.” ONEQ elaborates by saying that she doesn’t approach her art with any intentions of being famous; her sense of artistic accomplishment comes from creating artwork that she personally finds meaningful. This sincerity that she approaches all her illustrations with is undoubtedly another aspect of what makes her artwork so alluring.


スケッチブックやデジタルで描く作品のみならず、多数の壁画も手がける彼女は、近い将来さらなる壁画制作に意欲を見せています。彼女は、「もっと多くの壁画を制作したいと思っています。世界中のいろんな場所で壁画を制作しながら旅ができたら素晴らしく楽しいでしょうね。上海にもいつかぜひ描いてみたい」と言います。ONEQは、有名になりたいという欲求のみで作品に取り組むわけではなく、彼女自身の芸術的達成感が作品制作自体から同時に湧いてくるものであり、それが最も彼女にとって有意義だと感じる瞬間だと語ります。彼女の制作プロセスにおける誠意が、紛れもなくその作品の魅力を引き出す要素なのです。
